TBH I’ve always suspected that whilst most of the protesters are peaceful, if the minoirity of people what try and kick things off aren’t actually feds, they are just losers like petty criminals who would just as soon jack some kid for their vodafone as protest outside a Vodafone shop, and they have beef with the Police because they’ve been rightly arrested or maybe sent down for criminal or violent behaviour.
Even if the protests against tax avoidance are legitimate, intimidating a shop and its customers is no different from a right wing group harrassing an Asian shop with the aim of getting it closed down.. if you don’t like how a business operates, then boycott it – otherwise it ends up no better than chavs what hang around shopping centres and cause shit..
Agreed. If these masked tossers are prepared to act in a violent way then I sincerely hope the police utterly crush them. I’m not totally heartless though, I pray no innocent protesters get caught up in this, hopefully they’ll have enough sense to stay away from the trouble. Although I’m sure the masked trouble makers will say the police started it should it all kick off!!!
so far they’ve managed to get oxford street locked off to traffic so people have had to be diverted out of buses.
People from round here might have spent £30-40 on transport for a day out in London – ironically, the same people who are gutted about their library being closed. I don’t like the bullshit consumer society much but you can’t force people to accept your views by making their lives more difficult.
Thats how the unions fucked up when I was a little boy, my formerly hippy parents withdrew their support for alternative causes because of the disruption their strikes caused to public services. To be fair modern unions have moved on from this (strikes are a very last resort nowadays), so its time for the genuine progressive activists to do the same.
after some random dude got his car window busted in simply for being there and owning a nice car, the union marchers (the main lot) have actually “kettled” some of the more violent ones by marching around them so they are stuck in the middle and can’t pelt shit at the met without putting others at risk 😉 :laugh_at:

Good on em! 😉
300 protestors have broken away and invaded fortnum and mason, place now completely surrounded by TSG..
HA. Did you hear that the Libyan authorities have stated that the current demonstrations in London are in protest against the UN military action against Libya?!?! :you_crazy

The police looked vastly outnumbered, what would you do if you were one of those coppers? Hundreds of people in front of you, you don’t know if it’s going to turn violent, there only a handful of your colleagues around you (compared to the protesters). The protesters start moving en mass towards you, You fear for your safety cos if it kicks off then the situation will become fubar. They might be coppers but they are also human. I would be fucking shitting myself if hundreds of protesters were massing towards me and I probably would lash out as well.
What would you do?
Well luckily you’re not a police officer! If I were in that position I would try not to follow the irrational logic of fear, and use proportionate action – i.e. if I saw an individual acting violently I would use reasonable force against them. I certainly wouldn’t aimlessly lash out at innocent people at the front of a massive surging crowd. There may be many more protesters than police, but the police have the advantage of professional quality shields, protective clothing and weapons. Situations where they are in any genuine danger are very rare.
Following various news sources online and speaking to people there it seems the protests today have been bigger than expected with estimates of up to half a million people. And, so far, have been mostly peaceful and festive, with relatively small outbreaks of violence – the Guardian quotes an estimate of this involving 0.25% of the protesters. Lots of interesting things going on including occupation of Fortnum and Mason’s

Innit mate!!!!
there have only been 9 arrests.
Also even the cops are counting the breakaway actions as separate to the march and acknowledging the main march is peaceful. Bear in mind the Met are getting their budgets cut as well!

Idiots. :you_crazy
wow he’s so hard he has to wear a bally PLEP
go to Waterloo for 11, met some friends – then walked for over 2 hours to actually get to the back of where the demo was starting (approx 10 – 15 mins away usaully – but police had to crowd control as so many people) and we heard peeps had already got to hype park by that time….
then had a fantastic demo for approx 4 more hours – by the time we got to Fortmum and masons the ?U cuts lot (? I think)
were just going in,
all the ‘anarchists’ (faces covered, etc etc) started coming down so we decided to carry on to Hyde park and not stick around as the atmos started feeling moody – and that was’nt what I or my friends are about ……

They are not using violence for no reason you idiot! They are using violence for a good reason to stop devasting public service cuts that will wreck this country! They are also fighting against the capitalist system which causes wars and massive death and destruction around the world! No revolution in history has ever been peaceful and it is unlikely that the battle to overthrow capitalism in the west will be either.
