i was gonna take part but i didn’t relise it was febuary lol:you_crazy raaa
hmm – who actually organised this? it seemed to even have backing from some nations governments!
in these days you need security clearances to turn out the lights of public buildings; this would have had to be authorised at very high level
it surprised me as the three nations mentioned in the following report weren’t even the European nations I traditionally consider to be “green” (i.e the Scandinavian and Teutonic nations) but it looks like theres a big environmental movement in these countries with actual power (no pun intended!)
The Eiffel Tower, lit by 20,000 bulbs, also went dark at 1955 (1855 GMT).
During the switch-off, the power grid operator RTE observed a fall of 800 megawatts, representing just over 1% of France’s total consumption.
It comes a day before the release in Paris of a major report warning of humanity’s role in climate change.
The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is expected to say that climatic changes seen around the world are “very likely” to have a human cause.
‘A real issue’
Environmental campaigner Anne Briangault told the BBC that people would like to be involved in tackling climate change but needed advice on what they could do.
“… we are explaining they can do things, they can switch off some lights but it’s not enough. Politicians have to make actions too,” she said from the base of the Eiffel Tower.
Some experts warned the switch-off could backfire, arguing that more energy could be consumed because of a power spike when lights were turned back on. However, no problems were immediately reported.
Several other European cities also staged symbolic blackouts. In Rome, the lights of two of its celebrated monuments, the Colosseum and the Capitol, were turned off.
In Spain, Madrid’s Puerta de Alcala arch was plunged into darkness.
In the Greek capital, Athens, lights illuminating several public buildings – including the parliament, city hall, and the foreign ministry – went dark.
When i worked at Scottishpower and people complained about the size of their bills most of them were shocked when we told them that all those things they leave on standby are using virtually the same amount of power as if they were switched on..
found the campaign website here
I will need to read it properly when I have more time (it takes me approximate 1.5 times longer to read stuff in French than in English) …. and there is no English site I can find for those of us who do not understand French…

Take part in the citizens against climate change movement
The alliance for the Planet launches a simple appeal to all citizens, 5 minutes respite for the planet: if everyone turns out their lights on 1/2/2007 for 5 minutes from 19h55 to 20h00 [french time]. Its not about saving 5 minutes of electricity but about attractiung the attention of the public, the media and those who make the decisions about energy about the urgency of taking action
5 minutes respite for the planet it wont take long, costs nothing, and will show the presidential candidates its an important political issue.
Why the 1st of february? the next day, in Paris, the new report of the GIEC group of the United Nations will be released [inter govermental expert group on climate change]. Eventually this will affect France: we should not miss this opportunity to highlight the urgency of the climate change problem for the world.
If we all take part this could have a stunning effect on the media and the politicians less than 3 montths before the presidential election!
Circulate this appeal as widely as possible among all those you know by all means.
