ok so you have a tv in your house but only use it for say dvd/games console etc , do you still need a tv licence?
its a legal grey area which has been subject to debate over the years and changing policies.. – the authorities did argue that as it contains the RF [radio frequency] circuitry that can pick up the TV signal over the air – you needed the license just for having the equipment (TV set), whether you use the RF section or not to receive the signals.
n the 1980s people did occasionally use this blag as well but then the Govts lawyers picked up on a change in the electronic design of some TV receivers so withdrew the loophole.
Ofcom have since changed their policy since 2003 –
if you definitely only use the TV for non-broadcast receiption you can argue against paying the license – but they expect you to write into TV licensing giving them the reason why you don’t think you should have a license, to disconnect all antenna cables from the TV, and to retune all the channels of the TV receiver to blank spaces.
TBH you don’t have to write to them but I suspect that if you do not and they are doing checks in your street they are more likely to search your house and inspect the equipment to check you aren’t blagging it.
if they find any antenna cables or a TV which still has its channels set they could still try and bust you.
yer thought as much. so basically as long as you have a set switced on they can tell.
yep. A TV generates electromagnetic radiation of its own (as well as receives it) and detector vans can easily pick this stuff up..
Are you sure GL ?
I have a TV in the house but its never plugged in. I also have a TV card (also not plugged in).
I dont pay a TV license and i was pretty sure when checking the wording it was ok to own a TV only used for gaming etc…
NB: this refers to an initial post where I mentioned the pre-2003 situation with regard to TV licensing

I’ve checked a few sources again (including TV licensing) and it seems that since 2003 there has been a slight concession from Ofcom, I have updated the post to reflect this.
Incidentally I did check the TV licensing site first time round and the concession wasn’t made very obvious at all… Clearly its been very grudingly given and I think they will try and catch people out.. if you definitely never want to watch TV I’d try this, but be careful of being tempted to plug in the antenna “just have a look at one or two shows” if the detector vans are around.

I replied to their letter saying i dont need a license. They sent a letter back basically saying ok but were gonna come round and check! They never did.
To be honest they are welcome to check, ive got nothing to hide. Probably wouldnt let them in the house on principle though. Mainly because afaik they have no legal right to search your house.
they can’t search your house initially, and you can refuse to let them in, but if they have “reasonable grounds ” to suspect you have an unlicensed receiver they can go to the magistrates for a warrant and then come back with this (and maybe OB as well if “required to prevent a breach of the peace”)
by which time you have eaten yout telly , vivian:crazy:
if you want to get around paying your tv license send off the payment by cheque, wait till you get your thankyou for paying letter.. then cancel the cheque.. my mate did that and never heard anything back from them. I did sort of the same thing, set up a direct debit got the thankyou letter and then cancelled the direct debit – never heard heard anything back from them eithier. Also they even if they turn up on your door step you have the option of setting up a payment arrangment then and there or tell them to fuck off in which case they cant force entry unitl they go and get a warrant from the police, which obviously isnt ideal but does give you time to either get a license or move the tv the fook out of the house!
