  • This is an extract from a pressrel from the May bank holiday rave which happened on the Ridgeway

Four people have been arrested for minor drugs offences and one for theft of a bicycle. No further information is available on these people at this time.

Does anyone know any more about what happened here?

if someone rode to the party on a stolen bike (or worse still nicked it from a cyclist in the vicinity who may have left it unlocked whilst having a rest stop) and was caught then TBH they got what they deserved from the cops.. And after some scrotes forced my garage door in 2002 and removed a bike which some friends had specially built for me I would advocate re-using coombe gibbet for dealing with bike thieves… (I now keep my bikes inside the house..)

OTOH are the cops routinely stopping any young people they see near the ridgeway on bikes, particularly if they happen to be in the vicinity of raves? How would they tell a raver apart from the people who always cycle on the ridgeway.

Does this mean I am going to have to carry the paperwork showing which bike shop I got mine from (legitimately bought with my own money) every time I go about in South Oxfordshire, lest I am accused of stealing my own machine?

what next, the local cycling club rides being stopped by TVP roadblocks and everyone being requested to bring in their bike shop receipts within 7 days?

it realy wouldnt suprise me at all, im sure anything enjoyable, consisting of large groups will one day be banned.

Europe’s authorities are actually shit scared of any large gathering as they feel there is a potential for trouble. All festivals now have to provide a report to the emergency planning committee of their local police force or Resilence commitee!

there was actually a spate of racing cyclists in Europe being stopped by cops, but they were taking stacks of drugs to win the races (and some of the cocktails were combinations that our local junkies would balk at injecting!)

apparently last year one ridgeway cyclist (one of the mountain bikers) came across a rave, stopped to check it out, was offered (and knowingly accepted) a fat line of K – then after a chat with the ravers carried on on his bike ride (he was in a group).. Fair play to him – I suppose it hurts less when you fall off..

I tend to actually ride on the country roads near the the ridgeway though rather than the ancient road itself, it is too rutted up by SUVs and tractors to be pleasant going (particularly on a touring bike with thinner tyres). I did try the Ridgeway a couple of times, and ended up on my arse in the mud in three separate counties. After that I decided to stick to the normal roads…

still curious about the incident with the bike thief – the cops don’t seem to be able to recover stolen bikes on the street, how come they manage to spot one out in the sticks?
