A big van with 9kgs of oxyacetylene is alight on the A12 at Marks Tey (near Colchester) (ironically it belonged to the Fire Brigade!).

The driver is thankfully unhurt (and has gone home to recover and must be feeling particularly sheepish) but the A12 is stopped in both directions as are the trains stopped either side of Colchester

As its oxyacetylene Fire and Rescue have put a 24 hour exclusion zone on it (oxy heats itself up and can go kaboom even after the fire is out!)

They’ve called out the military bomb disposal unit to borrow a robot to help deal with the fire…

If you live in East Anglia and are thinking of travelling south tonight I’d make alternative arrangements…

update: Essex Police firearms team now on standby, they are considering shooting the cylinder so they can get the A12 moving again! (they do this in other countries but its the first time it would be done in the UK..)

A12 northbound re-opened – rest of road/travel links should be open by 08:00 tomorrow..

Trains also now back and running in both directions.

just shows how much this area depends on a single main entry/exit point though…

    Southbound A12 re-opened at 10:15.

Tried to find some pics but Essex Fire for aren’t releasing any for press use (don’t want to nick the Archant ones as they are copyright.)
