Good luck to the promoters doing this – to be fair the Malthouse isn’t a bad venue nor unsafe but this safety is achieved by full ID scanning and all sorts of security check, more than I want to be dealing with for a weekend out.
Although it might seem like a compliment to be constantly pulled up on ID/age challenge in some venues, it is partly due to racial profiling by security staff who might still have their minds in the 1980s/1990s, plus due to my accent folk often assume I am from Colchester, which is even more of a “potential threat profile”.
I hope it all goes well, but Ipswich is a “tough nut to crack” because there are a lot of “wannabe tough nuts” around, especially stressed young men on a short fuse, and it only takes one or two to fuck up everyones night (or the nightlife as a whole). I’ve lived here long enough to understand why and often the folk who start problems really aren’t even “bad people” but just get pushed over the edge by random things in their lives or feel challenged and end up wanting to prove themselves, ironically very similar to SE Asians! But incidents that get overlooked in a crowded, high crime city are not tolerated in a small town like this.
All that said at least music-wise this event will be way better than anything else going on in town this weekend..
