  • Although this is from a local news article about Suffolk, they managed to get on the record comment from both Facebook and Twitter spokespersons about their level of co-operation with the British law enforcement authorities.

This is the first time I’ve seen a statement like this in black and white in mainstream media from the admins of a corporate social network. (of course they all give up info but most of them used to avoid answering questions if asked about it..)

COMPLAINTS to police about alleged crimes linked to Facebook or Twitter soared by more than 600% in the last four years in Suffolk, new figures show.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request showed a total of 500 alleged incidents involving Facebook (494) or Twitter (six) were reported to police between 2009 and 2012. It climbed from 28 in 2009 to 218 in 2012 – a rise of 679%.

They included allegations of sexual offences, fraud and forgery, and public order and harassment.

A Facebook spokesman said: “Just like mobile phones and TV’s, Facebook is part of our everyday lives.

“Facebook’s Community Standards, supported by reporting tools on almost every page of the site, mean such conduct is swiftly dealt with.

“People on Facebook act as the world’s largest neighbourhood watch and are very active in keeping the site safe.

“When matters of serious criminality are found on Facebook, then we work with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.

“It’s worth remembering that this FOI shows when social networking has been mentioned in a report. It is not an indication that in every instance social networks were the cause or carrier of the crime.”

A Twitter spokesman said: “Twitter adheres to the laws of the countries in which it operates. We also have clear rules and terms of service, which outline what behaviour is and isn’t acceptable on the platform.”

Moral of the story – dont go bragging about murdering someone on Facebook? Haha

I remember when the London raids went on some dumbass people were posting their loot on Facebook, idiots. You didn’t need to know something like this to know police would be monitoring Facebook after crimes like that just happened.

To be fair most people have some braincells and do not brag about “major crimes” on FB. what the coppers are also counting here is people arguing on it and threatening each other and then it actually escalating into a physical fight, which is rife in the redneck villages round here. But they would have used fixed and mobile telephones before that, which the coppers are well aware of (many of them work closely with the boffins at rat salad park who monitor our telecoms networks).

The bigger problem for us is that lots of people do things that they do not feel are crimes, but others do such as low level dealing using laundered benefits money. And Farcebook is way too open and easy to get info on people. I don’t even use it, and yet just by using what is open and on the public bits accessible via google I can find out a ton of info about many people including their friends, music tastes, political views, the region they live in, whether or not they are in work, and then piece this together with other info from google to locate them.

I do not have any access to info greater than that of any normal civillian, so just imagine what the Police are able to do…

I read in some IT trade website that the East Anglian constabularies and the BT boffins actually went over to London after the riots and shared their techniques with metpol as they had used them successfully against “local youth criminality”. But East Anglia is a relatively quiet, safe area and the only large scale youth criminality in recent years (going by mainstream social norms, not ours) was that associated with unlicensed music events and the use and dealing of drugs.
