MORE than a thousand residents are tonight being told to evacuate their homes after a huge war-time bomb was washed up on the beach at Felixstowe.

The 250lb Second World War shell was swept on to the beach by wind-lashed waves over the weekend – and spotted by a workman who accidentally scooped it up in his digger bucket.

Police set up a half-mile exclusion zone today along the seaside of Langer Road, between Under Cliff Road West and Manor Road, pending an assessment by a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Squad.

mad isnt it, where has it been sitting for the last 60 years is what i want to know

in the North sea mud, probably unearthed during recent work to shore up the sea defences. There were a fair few bombs dropped on Felixstowe and the surrounding coastal towns, its a major port and we also had our radar installations a bit further North at Bawdsey.

    I hope damo666 is OK!

everyone is still evacuated. A 500kg bomb full of still live (and potentially unstable) explosives, according to the Navy it could blow up half of the seafront.

Once the bomb disposal team identified the bomb the exclusion zone was increased dramatically to include all the seafront from the leisure centre to the Manor Club and all the roads behind. Roadblocks were set up at the Ordnance roundabout, at Sea Road and Dock Gate One, with only people with exceptional reasons let through.

Later, the decision was taken that, as a precaution, people should be asked to evacuate the area. Hundreds of police, paramedics and police community support officers (PCSOs) gathered at a muster point in Garrison Lane shortly before the evacuation process began.

its like the war all over again, 60 years later..

The controlled explosion has been delayed due to high tides..

the bomb has been towed half a mile out to sea and secured to stop it drifting away so everyone is allowed back in their houses..

So do they actually explode the bomb, or just destroy specific parts with their own explosives?

It didn’t sound right, when It mentioned the Bomb team was going to be very close by when they destroy It.

First they build an impenatrable shield of papier mache round it. They’d be mental otherwise.

i’ve seen a couple controlled explosions, although nothing on this scale

the ones i saw were suspect hold alls. the military people put what looked like a viscous metal blanket over the bag, with another explosive under there, then blew it up

the ‘blanket’ did move and there was quite a lot of smoke smoke, but the bang was something else

in fact the sound shook my eyes and made it hard to pinpoint what i was watching

ah the joys ofliving in the middl east

a large wwII exb was found by my gran in the 1970s when she was cutting back bramples. it had been 20 metres from her house for 30 years. lucky to be here

explosion delayed until the afternoon due to British weather.

in the meantime, here is a gramophone record.
