  • 12 000 people bother with Ipswich nightlife? must be mostly from all the small little villages…

45 serious violent offences per month might not seem like a lot but I reckon they mostly occur at weekends and work out to be a fair few. bear in mind these are the ones what the old bill find out about, I reckon there’s much more low level violence and revenge attacks..

of course the bulk of these offences are mostly alcohol related but nowadays people combine recreational drugs with binge drinking and the streets are still angrier than 10-20 years ago..

Representatives from the town, including mayor Jane Chambers, Suffolk Chief Constable Simon Ash, Ipswich Borough Council leader Liz Harsant, business leaders, and members of Barwatch, were at the University Campus Suffolk building on the Waterfront to hear what the scheme can achieve.

They were also told the frank truths about violence in the town centre during the evening with 45 offences being categorised as serious each month.

Superintendent David Skevington said that at peak times 12,000 people make their way into Ipswich to enjoy the night life.

Work is already underway to combat the tide of crime with a number of projects in place. These include a night-time economy plan, creation of a dedicated night-time police team, taxi marshalling, introduction of a violent crime car, increased police presence over the weekends, the Innkeeper IT database and the hugely successful Town Pastors.

New initiative is poised to tackle

I think they are all the same chain/franchise. its probably where they get the 12000 from as the feds have got loads of CCTV and often they work with boffins at UEA etc to develop proper flash software what can count how many are in groups just from camera footage….

:laugh_at: ive proper grown out of it and im still a good 2 years off from the ‘age’

Ipswich was shit for clubbing when i lived there i dont no why people even bother.

My dad is a fair large bank manager and lends money to some of the ipswich clubs, he used to tell me that the probelm with seroious voilence was from all the essex boys coming down. They used to go to zest nightclub (the one that got closed because of the shootings) near the railway station.

When this got closed alot of the ipswich clubs didnt let black essex people come into there clubs by using an excuss such as dress code. This was to try to prevent thier club from becoming the next zest.

Im not sure if this is the problem with voilence these days as it was a couple of years ago but i reckon it is part of it, as there was people who used to cause trobule in ipswich and then fuck off back to there county.

    still the case.

Whilst I can understand to an extent this “blunt instrument” approach (it doesn’t help that followers of urban music seem to thrive on an atmosphere of conflict) , it also means I don’t bother spending my money in town – I’m not white, look considerably younger than my real age, and speak with an accent which leads to people thinking I am from Essex/London.. (I was in fact born in London and spent most of my life in London/SE England)

Thus despite being a quiet and peaceful chap and not a big scary dude I am constantly scrutinised by security staff everywhere as well as “local yokels” occasionally trying to start hassles.

the next option if people continue to behave like idiots is simply to restrict the number of late night venues by pushing up their licensing fees which is what the new goverment will be doing very soon…

Zest has reopened as Switch / the malt house venue (with the larger space used somewhat bizzarely for tribute bands, as if there aren’t enough venues in this town for this!)

they are running it as a standard commercial club, with the Clubscan ID card scanner and membership. The only dance tracks they play are commercial ones on Saturday night.

To be fair I don’t blame them for operating this policy for security reasons and after previous events, at least it will limit the violence to fights between those what know one another, or incidents of casual stranger violence rather than shootings, stabbings and gangs coming from other areas plus PALS closed earlier this year so that crowd wiill go there..

just found this – its a old report from August but what is unusual and significant is a very senior Suffolk officer (rather than Norfolk) making this quote… especially an officer who (as well as raves) has dealt with the aftermath of a lot of drug-related and nightlife related crime ranging from the Zest shootings to the murder of a popular Traveller by another younger traveller who was a coke addict..

Chief Superintendent David Skevington said: “It’s important to remind people that we will continue to work with the organisers of licensed musical events.

it did not stop Suffolk Constabulary for asking for a staggering £20 000 for the licensing / policing costs of Philosophers Fair, but it appears that they are doing this as much because London/SE England promoters arepaying that sort of money rather than deliberately trying to discourage the events (TBH if I were the other Alex even if I wasn’t going to hold the event I’d have requested for a full breakdown of what the £20 000 was going towards, including how much goes to other blue light services) – and also sent a press release to Archant and the other local media asking for a open debate about these costs.

In fact many other local community events are cancelled for the same cost reasons and safety issues (some caused by the gary boys finding out they could disregard informal road closures), some as harmless as a pumpkin festival in Bungay….
