  • Hmmm… I think maybe somebody has been downloading pictures.

… no, on second thought’s, it’s just Prince Harry showing off his Pride and Joy.

picture here, it s a big kitty! It may be perched on a large rock, post or anything higher than the rest of the ground and is looking for mice and rats in the field – this elevated height and stance will make it look way bigger than it actually is.

there are two genus of small cats, Felis spp and Prionailurus spp.

They can and do interbreed (many Oriental breeds of cat have Prionailurus genes) and give birth to hybrids who are often physically very large, especially the tom cats. Such a cat, whether an exotic breed or a moggy, is often viewed to be too much of a handful for a housing estate type area (as it is can end up being blamed for anything from bullying other cats to stealing food and clothes from washing lines, baskets and other small objects including mobile phones) so they are often rehomed to rural areas and kept as outdoor cats especially on farms (due to their good hunting skills).

ginger maine coon cat from the local area, almost certainly what this animal was

BBC News – ‘Essex lion was my pet cat Teddy Bear’ – owner

I live in the Peak District and these types of sightings are quite common.

One time me and a few friends went camping in the hills a few miles from my house and whilst we were up there I am almost 99% posative I saw some type of big black cat. I asked my Dad about them when I got home and he told me the story of people releasing them years ago but no one had seen any for a long time.

black (domestic) cats can also look way bigger from a distance and are regularly misidentified as panthers and the like.

at one point the heli from my area (Alpha 99 / G-SUFK ) was also deployed, I think that might be because it has better thermal imaging kit than the Essex aircraft.

The whole thing is rather bizzare TBH as Essex (and wider East Anglia) is a known the world over as an area for middle aged folk keeping exotic pets so you’d expect people to be aware of these big kitties. Plus they don’t even like outsiders or visitors in that area all that much, so its not as if its some kind of viral marketing thing for local businesses…

these were in the local paper, better secure all doors and windows and batten down everything, whole region is overrun….

best story iv heard this year.

the funniest bit is how totally unimpressed the two tomcats suspected of being the Essex lion are at being paraded in front of most of the UK’s television cameras and reporters :laugh_at:
