THOUSANDS of homes have been left without power after the Sizwell B nuclear power station went off-line in its first unplanned shutdown for around three years.

Homes and businesses across East Anglia, London, Cheshire and Merseyside were affected by the incident between around 11am to 1pm yesterday.

This is yesterdays power at work, although we didn’t lose power you can see the voltage drop..

We’ve had bare unscheduled power cuts lately, for a few hours each. Really fucked over the pub I was working at, it was packed and then the power went off.

we’re lucky at work because where our sites are situated are on the corner of two villages and there are multiple feed points for both the high voltage (11 000 v) and low voltage (400/230 V) networks – and to be fair EDF try and do a good job especially as one of our sites is an old peoples home so its a major emergency if power is lost..

the bigger problem is since the electric was privatised, there has been less investment on the important stuff like the cables and equipment that gets the power to your houses and businesses safely, and money has been lost on this artificial “free market” for what should be a local publically owned resource.

The old Electricity Boards worked perfectly well by the 1980s – the power mostly stayed on, it wasn’t excessively expensive and they could still do “free market” stuff like selling tellies and cookers if they wanted to.

my dad was working on this he said that it is the first time something like this has happened in 26 years (1981)

there was a gnarly sotrm last night

TBH I’m not that surprised this happened as we had colder weather again, so people would have stayed in and even switched on loads of heating appliances etc so more demand for electric.

Ironically one thing the storm (thankfully) didn’t do was knock out the power yet again…

How much is a decent diesel genset (about 6KvA these days?)

Tell me about it i got woken up with the feeling and sounds of someone bombing my house i quite like storms but that shit me up it was right above our house

I soon will have a couple lister diesel 5kVA gennies up for grabs, One will be with a long run fuel tank and electric start – Thinkin of making the other leccy start too just gotta get my ass in gear and finish sortin them out.

As for powercuts, heres what i installed in our house, just plug my 2cyl lister genny in flick a switch and were back on in 30 secs. Runs the house (main CU) and all the sub feeds to the studio & workshop too. 😉
