Exactly – this didn’t happen overnight. some hippies I know knew one of the lads who got killed, he wasn’t that bad a bloke but went off the rails… basically what happens is one manages to get social housing and the strongest take over the house and bully them and kill them if they stand up for themselves (BTW this all happened centuries ago when there was death penalty and transportation to Australia (hence why there is an Ipswich over there too)) so just having harsher penalties doesn’t help, but nor does letting people piss their lives away…

good article here in the grauniad, with a fuller picture of the problem… though if Rebecca Smithers from the Guardian thinks that is a pretty wooded area, then she has clearly spent too much time in London yet not had a proper look around Suffolk. That area was always a place where street drinkers hung out for many years, they were then I moved here 6 years ago, the issue wasn’t simply that they were there but started getting increasingly aggressive over the years….
