An illegal rave was staged by New Years Eve revellers within a disused warehouse at Newnham Lane on the Mill Lane trading estate in Alton.
Some 900 people gathered at the former Laleham Healthcare building for the party which lasted into the early hours of New Years Day.
Police followed a convy of 40-50 viechles – including several camper vans – into Alton at 12.30am on New Years Day. But the vehicles dispersed, heading north towards Odiham. By 2 am police had been alerted to a rave party at Mill Lane.
As the celebration was well away from residential areas and the event seemed to be under control, police decided it would not be practical to call in reinforcements to disperse the party goers.
“By 5am on New Years Day most people had left and there were no barricades on the roads,” said a police spokesman.
The incident is being invesigated as a public order offence, but if anything is found to be substantially damaged, then it could be pursued under a criminal damage category.
barricades? WTF? – what on earth makes the cops think ravers deliberately barricade roads. never heard of that happening in 15 years (OTOH sometimes some people just park in daft places!)
they have also heavily played down the number present and the duration of this event (which was certainly going on after 05:00!)
police only had two spare officers that night, therest were busy in alton town making sure the vast amount of rowdy chavs didnt cause havok across the town.
basicly ive read two articles about this event. both a similar story of the police following a convoy, getting lost, finding out about the party, and ‘deciding’ not to do anything. they also said the rave had prity much died at 5pm and officers moved in and closed it down……….bollox did they, i was there at 6pm, no sign of police and the party shut down coz shazam cudnt set their rig up after storm n surge switched off.
the police toned down what happened to make it look like they were in control of that situation. im suprised they didnt shut it down after some kid going to hospital after taking too much acid, someone going to hospital after jumping off the roof and the fights that took place.

I’d far rather TBH they did that than said “oh dear, we couldn’t stop it” to the Press, then locals and business owners lobbied the councillors, MPs and and Police Authority for “more action to be taken against these dangerous and disruptive events”.
That is essentially what happened in the Thames Valley area, and you are no doubt aware what the eventual result of this was.
The fights and accidents quota is far less than the average licensed drinking venue; (although every incident is one too many) I reckon though the cops had far worse to deal with in the town centre, everything was pretty much under control and the paramedics could easily drive up to where they were required. Credit it due to all the party crews who ensured that this was so.
