all this gravel was extracted to make concrete as a bed for transformers to be placed on (into this is often placed bricks with “DANGER-ELECTRICITY” embossed)
North Met Pit – Lee Valley Regional Park Authority
our new arrivals to our county often get into a pickle here as they (perhaps understandably) can’t work out why folk catch fish and then put them back in the water rather than eat them (but replace the ones you eat with young ones)
this chap worked there – they used bikes rather than cars or vans to get about (heavy stuff got delivered by a single van doing its rounds). in London and even other urban areas this made sense. With energy constraints recoccuring again it might make sense to do this again these days, but to use e-bikes and an electric van – that way the electric company won’t need to spend extra on fuel 😉
