A “public health emergency” has been declared in Nottinghamshire after six people died in the county within a week after taking unusually pure heroin.
Chris Kenny, the county’s director of public health, warned that a batch of the drug being circulated was three times stronger than normal.
He said the six who died were part of a drug rehabilitation programme.
Potential users as well as hospitals, pharmacies and GPs have all been alerted about the risk.

gotta do a test hit to see what you’re working with
so that means that at best they were working with 33% pure gear to start with???? that’s unabashed shit i’m afraid to say
The article also says all of them were in rehad so should have at least lost some tolerance.
that get clean but still want to get high mentality or whatever seems to kill a ton of people, makes me wonder about the efficacy of rehab for some drugs
Yeah when they leave rehab, if they complete it, they have no tolerance and you’d think heroin addicts of all people would know that.
i guess these people might have factored that into their thinking but the news report says they got super dope. alot of times they just shoot up their old dose like a hard head and have a fatal OD, i’ve never been a heroin addict but gotta suspect that the ritual of scoring a bag and shooting the whole bag overpowers some of the rational thinking of “hey maybe I should shoot a quarter of what i used to” or “it might be a good idea to shoot the same dose i did the first time i shot up”
people relapse a ton with or without treatment, either addiction is super prenicious or rehab doesn’t work as well as they advertise it to
Figures for those who stay abstinent are very low, rehab does nothing other than help get a person clean, it generally does very litlle after they leave when the person is vulnerable.
the only effective rehab for opiates addiction appears to be a combination of the original “British method” and intense supervision of the patient after they have stopped using (to get them back into employment/education) but unfortunately this method led to a backlash before I was even born (in reality it was only available to affluent middle class addicts).
Todays political climate in Europe is so divided that many political parties make a point of “not giving in to criminals” and would rather see the addicts die than them receive any treatment that incurs more taxpayer funding (although I didn’t think that undertakers and crematoriums worked for free; and it costs the NHS a grand or so for each dead body that requires an autopsy).
The dead addicts are essentially being used as “useful idiots” by the cops and local governments to persist with the “drugs are bad mmkay” mantra; the only reasons the UK can get away with this without being pulled up for human rights violations are that the country is still quite affliuent and prosperous and the number of opiate addicts is declining and they are getting older; as drug use was declining in the UK (I have a feeling the current government may be taking things too far with the public service cuts and could cause this to reverse).
Thanks GL.
If you had 33% smack that would be intense gear sold at the usual street weights. Street dealers typically sell in 10 and 20 bags and they contain roughly 100-150mg for a 10 bag, and 200-300mg for a 20 bag.
2 – 2.5mg of Heroin is the same as 10mg of Morphine or 100mg of Codeine. If you were to bang even 1 fifth of a 10 bag of a 33% pure batch you’d be pretty mashed, almost going over, or overdosed.
