Not sure why it is in the Suffolk news, though he might well end up in Holiday Bay – though not worth escaping for such a small stretch.
I think the sentence is just due to the job he did, bringing other criminals to judgement clearly means he should not commit crime himself, especially defrauding a public sector organisation when you work for one…. WTF did he think he was doing, it doesn’t even seem like he was on drugs or anything like that…
FFS if the meedja doesn’t provide a secure job, and £56k is way more than I earn in a similar period – then get another one what does, I learned that in my 20s. I do think its also unfair that judges seem to be able to order someone from PL to return to their country if they commit crime, yet can’t do the same for PT, rules should be the same for everyone in the EU. It would do him good though as Portgual is big and it is easy to hide away there and thus start a new life. Plenty of folk needing good honest work done on farms etc down there..
BBC Rogue Traders presenter Dan Penteado was today jailed for 12 weeks for council tax and housing benefit fraud worth more than £24,000.
The 40-year-old, who chases down bogus workmen with Matt Allwright on the television show, had previously admitted eight offences of dishonestly or knowingly claiming the benefits while not declaring he earned more than £56,000 from the BBC.

Yeah man. Cheeky basted. For some reason it was on my local news to. The irony of it all eh
in your case its not so daft that is was on the local news as as the crime was committed in SE England, also it would be a lot of the reporters from the BBC South region and they would be equally pissed off as the feds, courts and council as they earn if they are very lucky in a year half of what this muppet did and they don’t go around blagging the benefit either.
Though I will openly criticise the organisation when they have poor technical or content quality which sadly is more common these days, I have respect for the BBC and the ideas behind it, and public broadcasting in Europe as a whole, so its a shame to see things like this as it gives ammunition to those trying to have it abolished.
The irony.
so what
he’s not your average benefit fraudster – I couldn’t care two shits about any others, its between them and the relevant authorities what happens and whilst the papers have a right to report this I wouldn’t normally bother relaying a relatively mundane crime case to this forum. I also disagree with the ideas of the current government about limiting benefits as all the folk I’ve met who are on them have genuinely needed them.
But this reporter set himself up to expose others wrongdoings, then decided to commit crime. I doubt anyone would want to see a bent copper go unpunished, same should apply to journalists and activists who cross over into a enforcement rôle. I’ve not even got anything against that as I see a lot of eco activists do the same especiallly in this rural area, though I think its common sense they should be of good character, and they should also expect their opponents to monitor them (like what happened to the woman who exposed the turkey cruelty in Norfolk).
Secondly I am still very much an old fashioned socialist who believes in fair public services, benefits for those who need them, and public broadcasters.
This fool is abusing both and playing into the hands of their opponents.
Even the rest of the other idiots what manage to blag work with the BBC (like Jeremy Clarkson for instance) try and stay out of crime, plus this issue with short term working in the media has been a problem for over 20 years. You don’t become a paramedic if you are scared of blood, nor a soldier if you don’t like violence and being shot at, and even in my trade (ICT) the “fun” jobs aren’t the more secure ones.
I strongly think there should be more equitable income distribution in the creative industries (which would solve a lot of these problems, and perhaps even stopped the chap doing crime) but it will take a longer fight to sort this out. its why I do my media production stuff as a hobby rather than paid employment – I’ve worked in the industry before and that took all the fun out of it.
