Although MDMA users are always going to “lose the magic” after the first few doses or with regular use one big factor is set and setting.

Most people take MDMA in young adulthood when they are going to be more receptive to new experiences.

But as you get older you also go through “emotional puberty” which happens much later than physical puberty. For males it is as late as 30-36 years (it is slightly earlier for females, around mid 20s).

At this time in life even if you have not become a parent (which is what this is preparing you for) you are likely to have gained other responsibilities in life such as more demanding jobs, (having to arrange care for parents / relatives in their late middle age) and therefore have less spare time or opportunities to provide a good set and setting for taking long acting drugs (bear in mind recovery time!) At this stage in life MDMA can just lead to angst on the comedown as you start then worrying about the rest of the week, whereas other drugs might remove this anxiety or help motivate you more to deal with otherwise boring tasks and its also easier to do them and look/act relatively “normal” compared to MDMA.

The above is not a mid life crisis or a sign you are “too old to have fun”, just that your priorities in life have changed over the years!

IMO MDMA isn’t that much fun unless you have a proper party or rave to go to; in a genuine underground venue (where security aren’t on your case) or a warehouse or open air type rave and where everyone is on the same level – not a townie venue or houseparty where half the crowd are pissheads, and you need space to wander around/explore if possible and also not have to worry about 100+ photos of you ending up on social networks for others to judge, or worse, being expected to put them there as part of the peer group! This combination can be harder to find nowadays.

Not actually all that bad, other than realising that if I plan to tour NL and DE when I approach 50 or just before I will now to have to fill in a visa form, although in the right districts I could easily fill in “pilgrimage” as purpose of visit and still get away with turning up at EDM and other music events as long as I upload enough pictures of churches, relics etc to Flickr (there are alreadfy loads of people doing exactly that).

The folk unfortunate enough to get busted in NL are often not young people at all which hints there are 10 others getting away with it, and hopefully in a few years time I might even be eligible for legal stuff to prevent aches and pains that cause mobility problems with age, or even to keep away mental deterioration…

The only thing I might have to remember is to reset the controller on my e-bike so the curve does actually keep my average speed at 20 km/h and not 25-28 km/h, especially if I cross the border to DE as the traffic violation fines are harsh.

On a related note NL harm reduction advice goes from “nix18” for teenagers (don’t do any of it until you are 18) all the way to middle and senior age where it basically says “if you’ve made it this far, then try not to overdo things” :laugh_at:
