  • Some of the windows boot guides I read were saying, this boot disk will not work for a clean install. Ony for a partial boot. Thats how I got scared. There isn’t allot I wan’t to keep off my HDD, only my tunes I have created. Everything else like massive ABL2 and all them can just be reinstalled. I’m looking forward to having a fresh pallet to work on. But if GL is right about th HDD being on its way home, all this work will be in vein.

Sometimes corrupt windows installations can make the drives go a bit crazy, but normally it is the actual HDD having a heart attack. considering that you’ve had this nasty virus there’s still hope.

I went to visit the local nerds earler, I got a fresh dvd rw off him as he couldn’t find his vista boot disk, so i’m gonna give it another go shortly, although I think I need to take a quick nap, cos I feel a bit cranky.

this is a reply I sent to a young lady on partyflock who had a similar problem, in fact her disk had gone so bad the X: drive had activated. (found on Vista and Win7) (translation is below). the files are salvageable but you need to act fast. TBH if you have a computer shop downstairs then might as well get them to do it if it doesn’t cost too much.

the X: drive is an emergency boot system partition for newer versions of windows. When the system files on the C drive are corrupt, windows will start witht the X: drive. unfortunately, the hard drive is knackered. This problem often occurs if the laptop has been dropped. you must buy a new unit and fix it in the laptop case. then install windows again on the new drive. if you don’t have backups, you can use a data cable and another computer to copy your original files (photos, music and other stuff) from the old drive. And then you must make some backups!

Well the old girl has taken a tumble or two in her lifetime, thanks for the info.

this one I am using now has been fixed as it was my mums old one from Malaysia (hence why it has a US keyboard layout), its relatively new though from about 2008.

A combination of it randomly starting up off standby due to their notoriously bad mains electric and being jolted about when travelling back and forth between MY and Blighty did for the original hard drive and battery. with a bit more RAM, new battery and upgraded to Win 7 its handy for work when working on site on the telephone exchanges.

The screen is bigger than the netbook which now gets mostly used for decoding radio traffic due to its long battery life and clean power, also this plugs into the HDMI on the telly as I hardly ever watch normal telly..

I’d deffo try and back up your files to a dvd if you can as if you plug it into another pc then the virus might spead if there’s anyhting still left on your pc.

they could still get on the DVD, but at least the otehr pc wount get effected.

I don’t habe a desktop anymore, my mate neded a moniter so when he came round I just told him to take the whole lot. Wasn’t worth saving. the thing had be severly abused in it’s life. I swear it used to take about an hour to start up and shut down. The shell itself had been in our family for years. It started out as windows 2000. Poor old thing. Shame to see her go. I still got a really old PC in my mums loft though. It’s and old 486 with windows 3.11. It had a whole 1Gb HDD a creative labs soundblaster card. SVGA graphics supported. She was a stunner back in 94/95. You know kids these days take there alienware, crysis ultra setting playing NASA super-computers for granted. I remember when I we had to make so with EGA graphics and if we wanted to play certain games we had to boot from MDOS. Comander Keene, or Raptor, Duke Nukem 1 and 2. Oh yeah and who could forget Police quest 1,2 and 3. Leisure suit Larry in the land of the lounge lizzards. I even had these text adventure games that were pretty fun too. Ahh nostalgia. Have you noticed I tend to loose myself typing sometimes.

Its been over 24 hours since the virus made an appearence, that rundell32 error has ceased, and when I run reimage repair it’s coming up on zero threats, and reimage was the scanner that was detecting it, I may sound the all clear TBH. Still gonna try this format clean install though. Cheers Rafty.

Yeah I’d deffo do a fresh install to be sure. The viruses these days are quite advanced and rather then it just being some hacker kid trying to fuck shit up for no reason other then a bit of cyber anarchy, the majority are Russian mafia trying to make cash from online fraud/card theft. For all we know there could be something that’s telling it to be quite because I was trying to remove it and it’ll start up again sometime in the future or start working on stealth mode or some shit and try for your card details.

I know for sure it will have edited/fucked up your registry at least a little bit and I didn’t bother fixing that as you said you were gonna do the reinstall and it wasn’t worth the hassle if you were (but is important if you’re not going to do the reinstall), I just wanted to get everything working again to allow you to be able to do the reinstall. 😉

It’s likely to have left a backdoor open as well so people can access your laptop without you knowing which I also haven’t fixed (and wouldn’t really even be sure how to fix without guidance from some uber-geeks on a forum I look at sometimes).

yeah i’m gonna work on it in about an hour, i’m just building a bridge over my moat in minecraft.

you got a sheep farm? see some vid about breeding sheep in minecraft, me and my mate were in hysterics watching it (neither of us play, but it did look fucking funny). Let me see if i can find it hold on lol …..

Ahh I can find the one we watched, the guy’s trying to expalin how to deal with a bug where the sheep stop breeding, and his solution was to hit them and they start again if you tell them to, but he hit it too many times and killed his sheep … was so fucking funny … he sounded proper upset. :laugh_at:

used to be them and they do still have some involvement but increasingly nowadays its foreign students from that part of the world (though understandable folk think “russian mafia”), various Asians and even geeky British kids with tech knowledge but no morals. Quite a few prestigious unis in London have been turned over by metpol computer crimes squad recently.

not easy job, you need either a custom router or a draytek with a mirrored port, another computer to log the data and the skills to pick apart legit traffic from the worm. unless you are being paid to do so or have a real interest in this sort of thing, quite frankly its quicker and less hassle to reformat the computer than delve into network traffic at that level. I did set up a LAN/WAN monitor in the 2000s in a squat to show hippies how insecure many sites were sending passwords in plain text, but that was years ago.

Wow sending passwords in text format. Could imagime some hacker standing there with a fly net catching them.

Oh and nah I don’t have a sheep farm at the moment. I have bought it for the XBOX it so I have to start from scratch. Cos I deleted mincraft form my laptop few days back. I’m supprised you don’t remeber seeing it in my recyle bin when you were hacking my laptop XD. Yeah I have only just found out how to shift water from location to location. When I played it for a short period on the PC I was just trying to find out the basics of the game. Breeding is pretty advanced AFIAK. You should download it from somali pirate pay it’s so damn relaxing but very time consuming. I have lost allot of time to minecraft. I think where there isn’t really an objective, 250 crafter servers andover 2000 mods available makes it the perfect ocupation for a semi unemployed bum like me. I good a good link if anyone wants it. Hold up I wasjust trying to get on P.B and none of my boomarks are working for it. see for yourself and let me know if it workshttp://tpb.pirateparty.org.uk/torrent/7224246/Minecraft_1.2.5_Cracked_%5BOnline%5D_%5BUpdatable%5D_%5BServer_List%5D
