Ok, this might sound like a daft question, but I can’t find a specific answer on the net, maybe because Its obvious lol, but I wanted to check.
Is it illegal to have people sat In the back of a tranny or something similar, with no seats or belts? What are the consequences of being caught?
Ive decided Im getting a small minibus but would have more choice if I could just stick people in a van. Is it easy to put legal seats In a van?
Also, could I buy say, a 16 seater, remove some (I can drive a 9 seater max on my license) and register it as a 9 or whatever?
Just bored of cleaning out my car all the time, spent alot of money on the fucker! Plus lost a sideskirt going down a dirt track on Sat night haha.
Oh, one more thing, I read a disclamier on one site, saying I cant used my NCB on 2 vehicles? Is this true? Why not? So If I insure my car with 1 NCB on the policy, I cant Insure a van in the same way?
Cheers.
Hiya not sure on the insurance bit but I do know that if you get caught with people in the back of your van that are not in seat/wearing seatbelts that you as a driver get fined and points on your license..
You can fit seats into a tranny, someone i know has done that, they have 3 seats fixed in the back of the van that they can take out or put in when needed that they got from a minibus at a scrappy… you would then need to state how many seats in total you can have in the vehicle when you go to insure it..
Just found out with the NCB bit that you’re right u can only use your NCB on 1 vehicle but nowadays most companies give you a discount for insuring a second vehicle with them so just give it a try..
Reason being with the NCB that you could prang one and still technically keep your ncb on the other vehicle if you know what i mean..
I had a party tranny van which I insured as a six seater, coz I had a triple bench seat in the back. I used some kee klamp brackets bolted through the floor, so it was secured, and legit. You could have the seat either parallel with the sides, behind the driver, or parallel with the front seats behind the driver, or right at the back…
All I had to say was that it had been modified, when I insured it
Go for it – my party van was the best 300 smackers I paid out during raving times!!!
Was pretty well known by OB too!!
to be fair I’d always found the TVP black rats to be pretty sound for coppers
until people overdid it a bit their main issues with raves were legitimate concerns over drug driving and inexperienced/tired young drivers – after all they are the ones what have to go round peoples mums and say “your son/daughter has been killed/seriously injured in a road traffic collision”
there used to be a time when they complained about having to put their camera / ANPR vehicles into raves as “it wasn’t the best use of our resources”
that was until the hardstyle and Max Power crew started latching on to the scene, I think we have lost about 10 people in SE England and East Anglia due to rave-related collissions (if its not the journey back what gets them its often the monday journey to work) 😥
if you however have a legal vehicle and drive well the feds tend not to hassle you as much..
dont take any tips of us lot :laugh_at:
If you want to change the number of seats in the van you need to make sure your insurance reflects this.
If you are adding them make sure the seats are correctly installed [they usually require a reinforcement plate under the floor of the van at each mounting point and that the seats all have seat belts. [Try and avoid mounting seats where you will need to drill through the chassis – its a bad idea and a pain to do.] Once the seats are correctly fitted you should be able to send off the V5 for updating without any trouble and they should also pass an mot like that.
Loose people in the back of a van is dangerous for them and points on your licence.
WRT removing seats this should not be a problem if you update the V5 to reflect the number of seats now carried.

Cheers bud. I thought It might be Illegal, and wasn’t particularly keen in having people “loose” in the back of me van anyway!
So you sound like you’ve done this yourself, does It take much skill and money in proper kit to mount the seats?
I once foolishly leant on a insecure outward opening door in a moving rig van and was nearly pitched out of said vehicle on to the hard shoulder just outside Slough, managed to hold on to the side and some French ravers hauled my legs back in, it was like a scene out of a Jackie Chan movie :laugh_at:
we had 18 people in the back on a lwb hi-top tranny and had ob waiting for us at our local party venue, they let the driver off with a warning (not official) and just asked that we not do anymore partys in our local area.

I have been considering doing this to my van as we always seem to have one more person than seats and its always a pain
I imagine you need a good powerdrill and HSS metal drill bits and some appropiate bolts and washers and 2″ square plates for each mounting point. Pick up seats with seat belts as all new seats have to be belted by law. Seats from a scrappy – shop around:wink:
