Depends where you buy your fish from, my stepdads a fisherman and would go on about this for hours. ( in a nutshell the eu have a quota and share it for each country. England gets a tiny percent whilst places like iceland get a huge percent and comercial fisherman use very unfriendly methods whilst most smaller ones dont. Also the quota changed rapidly so you can accidently fish too much and get fines slapped on you)

And it is even harder to work out where your fish is coming from, short of actually boarding the boat when they are catching it. I’ve got enough kit here to monitor every form of radio traffic for land, sea and air, I can see the mouth of a tidal river in the distance leading to the North Sea and know where to look for shipping movements and yet its bloody hard to track down where fishing trawlers actually are as they shut off their AIS or do not carry it at all and avoid making radio transmissions (apparently this is because rivals can locate them and steal their fishing area). it gets to the point where some even get into danger as they do not tell the Coastguard / VTS where they are going and put themselves at risk of collisions with large cargo ships…

Why do you not mind eating fish but dislike eating meat? is it because you believe farming methods are cruel?

I dislike both to an extent BUT yeah I would say that because of farming methods meat probably worse as fish live natural free lives before slaughter.
Then again some fishing methods drag up the sea bed 🙁

What Im trying to say is I understand why people eat meat ( including myself) but I think its important to know exactly how its aquired and make things as cruelty free for them as possible.
Kudos to vegans, Iv tried that and failed misserably. Just never felt satisfied amd happy.

I think veal is just one of those unnecessary foods. Do we really need to eat calves?

What’s wrong with eating calves as opposed to fully grown cattle?

Do you object to the eating of lamb?

We are omnivorous but dont need meat to live, we eat it because it’s nice

We may not need meat to live (we now have ways of getting similar levels of the proteins and nutrients that we need by eating other foods) but cooked meat was the keystone in our brains evolving to the level it has now become where we are capable of conscious thought and creative thinking. It was only by being able to absorb the huge levels of protein from eating cooked meat (only a small fraction of the protein can be processed if meat is uncooked) that gave us the fuel to be able to power such a large and energy intensive brain. We wouldn’t have been able to sustain this on the leaves and grains and raw meat that supplemented our diets up to the point that we learned to use fire as a tool.

    First world problems.

Just be greatful you have the opportunity to eat daily.

lol you wouln’t get much meat of a lamb if you ate one trust. It’s just called lamb for some reason because people don’t say “I’ll have a leg of sheep please”

Nah it is lamb. Fully grown ‘lamb’ is called mutton

‘Leg of sheep’ sounds so much better though man, they should call it that instead!

No, it’s a lamb. My Uncle was a butcher in my village and for years I wanted to be a butcher too. I hung around his butchery after school for many years and learned a lot about the butchering of various animals and learned about the importance of quality meat as opposed to the processed crap you get in the supermarkets.

Lamb is the meat of a sheep < 1 year old. From 1 to 2 years the term "hogget" is (sometimes) used (though I have never heard it) and after that the meat is called mutton. Collectively all of it is known as sheepmeat for EU reporting purposes.

Also veal crates were banned in the UK in 1990 (we may have been one of the first European nations to do this) and throughout EU in 2007

From 2002-2006 I worked at the big Defra office in Reading where statistics for just about everything in the natural world (and the money transactions involved and also farmers subsidies) were processed and therefore had access to all sorts of curious bits of information. (most of it isn’t restricted more or never was and can be found online but you need to know where to look).

I would still devour that:weee: probably just need loads of it to get a hit

Maybe if we treated them as animals and not just products to eat they wouldnt suffer so much as they do.

Strangely enough i have noticed a pattern when i have fish n chips recently, I have felt fine at night eating it but the next day my face is a bit swollen but mostly my eyes are very swollen and itchy and also my hands look like they’ve been blown up and they’re itchy too, and i feel generally unwell so had to take the day off work. I never related it to the fish but it happened again on monday night and i took tuesday off work, then the penny dropped when i thought about the past 2 times i’ve took a day off work.. I ate the fish n chips the night before! That has to be the fish, but fuck knows why??
