Yeah you’re right TG, Alot of the folk interviewed said they turned up half an hour before closing, bit fucking stupid really!
Also about those students who couldn’t vote. Most of em turned up without any voting cards and many were not actually registered with that particular area.
And they wonder why they weren’t allowed to vote, the twats.
yes but some of them were waiting for like 3 hours.
now say 3 hours before 10pm is 7pm
which is more reasonable

this is reasonable indeed,
I went as soon as I got up as I knew it would be a quick in out 😉

Its not the point though, legally they cant refuse you because you dont have a polling card or any ID. And the people cant be blamed for an antiquated system that doesn’t tell you when the last admittance is so you have to try and guess how long the Q will be.
Just seems to me people fought and died for these rights, lets not let the media turn people against people. Councils have been cutting spending on polling day for years which is fine until you have a slightly higher turn out. The system is totally out of date.

they need a last orders really, a certain time you have to get there by to be sure your in time to vote.
you are able to vote without your card (advisable to bring ID) as long as you have registered –
the ads have been running for ages..
are the people claiming to have been disallowed to vote without their card registered?
My mate worked a polling staion and they will do all they can to locate you – or send you to the right place! as lots turned up to the wrong one, they had 5 different languages too –
I only trying to be devils advocate here as I know what some people are like – fucking lazy – go right at the end and then bitch and moan and blame everyone else for something thet they could have had controll over –
registering, getting there with plenty of time
I’m not talking about the ones who qued 3 hours, or the polling stsions that ran out of ballot paper – this is a badly run and badly organised system,
but plenty of other people managed to get there within the time is all …….
and…. mmm daily mail scum but….

How would you update it? Also I am not entirely defending the system. I am merely saying that in some of these instances it is the fault of the voters. Fair enough some got there on time but those leaving it to the last minute are a bit bloody lazy imo!
In my experience if people really want to vote then they’ll do it at the earliest opportunity. Not leave it half an hour before closing. Again I’m not defending the system, I just think some of these people have only themselves to blame.
Those who were turned away during the day though, that’s a completely different issue altogether.
.
I voted by post as I knew I would be working late – but at the same time if the polling station says it is open until 22:00 it should be capable of dealing with the volume of voters.
this is the first time in my lifetime I am aware of major problems at a British election and I have been interested in politics since age 8 (so thats 30 years!)
I’d be interested in seeing which party held the areas affected by these ”problems’.
Could just be my paranoia kicking off but maybe something more sinister is afoot here.

Voting wise I would have a “get here by 8 to get a guaranteed vote” so that people know there’s a cut off point. Perhaps (assuming it was a problem) ring fence council money for elections so they cant not put enough in and hope there wont be a big turnout. Have far more than could ever be needed voting forms as some places ran out.
Educate the police. As in some areas they were kicking people out even though they were indoors and had a ballet paper. As far as I understand it that is not correct, they should have been locked in and allowed to vote (some places did this). Doors must be locked and no more papers given out at 10, not that no one is allowed to vote. Not that you can totaly blame the police their understanding of the law is often basic at best in certain areas (think how long it takes to be a lawer as oposed to a copper I guses). Or I might be totally mistaken as its only things picked up from radio 4 and other media.
I think I would also have proportional representation as I cant see many drawbacks but then my knowledge of politics isnt very advanced so there probably are drawbacks I just dont fully understand them.
I see what you mean about people voting early, but what if you have kids and there’s an unforeseen circumstance that means you cant get there 2 hours early only 1. Doesn’t seem right that currently we just say tough tits and take away their legal right to vote. I bet your right though and a lot of people were just being useless and should have put in more planning, but then I fear a lot just dont have much free time to give.
who the hell would be a politician ay? damned if you do, damned if you dont.
there is something called a local resillience plan, where the Police, Councils, NHS and everyone else has to work out backup plans for anything what can go tits up in modern society. most of it is as you would expect to do with things like floods, bombs, the local nuclear power station going bang etc but it would make sense to include election procedures in this.
after all if you do a legal rave you have to comply with all sorts of health and safety plans….
I am a supporter of proportional representation in principle – but there is a risk of extreme right parties getting more power in todays society. but its a risk of democracy and where this has happpened in foreign countries it hasn’t been the disaster people feared. unforunately what it can mean is whilst most folk are smart enough not to support overt racism/discriminartion, the presence of hard right parties in government tends to bolster support for a wider authoritarianism and clampdown on contentious activities such drugs and nightlife (as recent events in the Netherlands are showing).
direct democracy!
