this is a Win10 x64 PC running the fast track preview build (hat tip to Tryptameanie as the link was also on one of the sites he linked another article from)
Could be quite useful for my work where there is a mixture of Windows and Linux kit as it means I can test stuff from home without having to log in to servers elsewhere (Python appears to run normally on this as well, although I haven’t yet checked if /dev/* maps to all the same places as it should on Windows)
See, taught him everything he knows lol.
it was on that site the Indians write; I think its based somewhere in Bangalore but could easily be Bradford for all I know. to be fair I was unaware of the site until Trypta posted numerous links from there.
Some caveats [explained on the MSDN site] such as most of /dev/ and /proc/ currently missing (which upsets a lot of code/scripts) but it is indeed a “mini VM” – the bits which work correctly hook the kernel (the C code shows it is running as 64 bits).
there are of course loads of conspiracy theories about MS’s motives in doing this but to be fair it is being added alongside enhancements to Powershell (the old DOS prompt) which incidentally finally seems to show ansi codes correctly like most Linux command line terminals do..
(the Linux screen looks different as it is using Unicode rather than the old DOS codepage; so the boxes are wrong characters. The colour codes remain the same across both versions).
