was in the garage and heard the phone go … walked and pressed the green button … the ringing stopped like normal but then the dialling tone came like i was making a phone call …
a voice answered …
”hello mr ****** ***” <--- he knew my full name he then went on to talk stating he wasnt calling to offer me a loan, mortgage or anything like that but asked about my financial situation … he said he was from a company called something like ”FPS” … apparently this company can help free you from debts which monthly payments while not taking up a second financial agreement with their company. he asked to approximate how much debt i was in saying “£5000? £10,000?” so i said ”few hundred quid” not the correct or exact amount but was curious in what he was going to say as his tone and way of speaking was nothing like normal tele sales or anything like that. by this point i was getting quite annoyed but was sticking at my ‘dont shout at tele sales people … its their job’ policy. i asked what exactly the company is and stated my bank call me and i have a safe financial agreement which im happy with. he cut off me off mid sentence and raised his voice saying ” mr *** will you please tell me!” i started laughing thinking of that fone hacker program imagining my voice on channel 4 trembling with fear as a mouse diagram with a weird mouth image pulls the stunt … he then wished me a good day and hung up seemingly uninterested in my few hundred quid … any ideas? i believe it may have been a scam, one of those high rate number ones where you call them but i dunno … cant stop thinking about it! anywho, all have a nice day and WATCH OUT!! 🙂 d>a …
1471 the number mate, I am sure telesales need to show their number when calling you… you will be able to find out who they are then…
I have had random calls like that in the past, I am sure they must get your details from somewhere. I also stick to my rule of not giving personal or financial details to anyone who calls me, I will call them if I want to discuss that sort of stuff…
ive tried calling the number back … no answer
will google FPS but dunno how far ill get
all i could find was a website on share prices … mmmm …
type the number in on Google… that should bring up info in them, did it with a number that kept calling me and there was a forum where they were moaning about the number calling people (was about 10-15 times a day, usually whilst I was working)
cant retrieve the number … says the last number called was my grandma’s number …
Is your grandma doing prank calls now :laugh_at:
:laugh_at:
on a more serious note … mum just got in, i explained what had happened and she said it happened yesterday …
Easy enough to get details from the electoral register and match them up with a telephone directory..
Many call centres just cancel their caller ID and it can be spoofed easily anyway on a VOIP circuit
The odd tones are probably just badly configured call centre / VOIP switrch software – The “dial tone” may also have been an American ringback tone – but if the kit isn’t set up right (as simple as one wrong entry in a config file) could do something like this
I had a number I didnt recognise keep calling me,
I ignored it and never picked up – but googled the number and it came up as some scam thing….
any chance you can contact your mobile / phone provider and see if they have a record of the number?
or atleast check if you’ve been charged for answering the call?
If your not sure what i would do is give him all my bank details.
maybe he just wants to help
no telephone company anywhere in the UK will charge for receiving an call.
the only way you could get scammed is if a caller ID comes back to an 09xx number or foreign number (00+country code) and you dial this number out of curiosity or “social engineering” (i.e being conned into dialling the number)
one scam is for a computer to dial random numbers (perhaps from an unrelated VOIP trunk) presenting the caller ID of the scam number and then to immediately clear down
also spam texts with the 09xx number
another is to send a postcard saying “you have a parcel” and point to this number
when the 09xx number is called one of these things happen
1] the distant trunk on the 09xx number immediately seizes (answers) the line (where billing starts) but plays back a ringback tone (so you think you are still waiting for the call to be answered
2] the call is auto answered a long call centre hold message (and are charged for listening to the message) whilst the scammers make money
and also the caller ID of the person (if present) is logged as “someone who fell for the scam” and then passed on to other scammers
unfortunately if you accidentally dial an 09xx number unless you are the sort of person who has equipment to monitor line conditions (on fixed lines) and know if a call has actually been answered it would be easy to get caught out by 1] until the bill comes in
the organisation in charge of high rate 09xx lines is actuallly fairly good at shutting down rogue operatoors (often working with feds and BT Security) but they need to be made aware this is happening..
most of these strange calls are just foreigin telesales places though..
i would forget, and moove on in life
