    depends.

thats different than saying england is full of shit, really. reading recent threads it sounds as though people think we’re in chaos. it’s very exagerrated.

the entire world is is a worse state than 10-20 years ago but its not that dangerous if you are careful.

But I don’t think any of the posts of young Londoners here are “media hype”. I know the areas daftfader and jonnyquest lived in fairly well as I used to go there a lot at their age. I also saw the gang / violence culture develop over the years and have had some lucky escapes.

Young men tend not to live in fear though but more in anger that they have to keep modifying their behaviour and be aware of risks. This manifests itself in many different ways.

Many more intelligent men aren’t going to carry illegal weapons or join a gang themselves, although some end up “training for self defence” and in so becoming more agressive (often this is carried through to the people they love, even their families and partners)

They also tend to end up reluctantly accepting an increasing presence of the Police and other authorities to “keep order”.

I’m not scared I walk round in this now!

yeah it does happen, i’m not suggesting otherwise

the said, mosside/longsight has a terrible reputation for gang-related gun crime, probably could rival london… yeah i wouldnt really choose to walk down some estates at 2am, but my brother lived there and kept his head down, never bothered at all.

i dont know what the point i’m trying to make is… there is a lot of bad shit in this world, but it could be a lot worse, and it isn’t as bad as everyone says it is?

personally i cant be arsed with getting down about the state of the world. and DF, i’ve seen 16/17 year old friends on smack and crack, known people being stabbed… even fucked up a fair amount myself. its a nasty business, life, no mistake. lets not let this turn into a “i’ve seen worse shit than u” cos i’m sure you have, but i’m not completely naive.

but it’s not all that bad. realistically we arent in some kind of chaotic country full of maniacs. good people outnumber bad by 1,000,000 to 10, by bad i mean capable of the things like stabbings.

anyway, werent stabbings more in the 70’s?

happens everywhere, always has done. i’m not sayin its good, but its nothin to panic about.

have you been buggered? as in stabbed? i’ve been jumped and kicked in. doesn’t make me scared at night.

i just think people jump on the bandwagon a bit too much.

I had my left arm shattered by a geezer who tried mugging me once, had a gun pulled on me in london once, Was trapped in the middle of a mass gangfight again in london. Been run over by a stolen car (I say run over but it wasn’t that bad!) Was almost kidnapped by a paedo when i was younger! Got bottled when i tried to help some geezer being beaten up, No joking i’ve had loads of dodgy shit happen to me in my lifetime, Just don’t like talking about it. Has it made me fearful? Nah not really, just very wary when i’m out and about. 😉

exactly mate, nowt wrong with being wary

it’s the media and people acting as though we should be scared to walk round a street corner that do my nut in (not anyone on here things that thankfully)

oh yeah i wasn’t saying worce shit has happened to me than you … just that what i have seen has given me the out look on things i have at the moment .. and its good that you dont seem to have the same “anger” like gl sais that some people get about it all

the poorer areas of big citys are were the most crime is coagulated into hot spots if you like …. any were there are lots of people that cant live within there means theres gonna be crime … i just wanna move out to the contry side some were ..get away from it all as it doesn’t make my life as good as it could be ….and even with your out look on life .. im sure you agree that you would rather not have to look over your sholder . or even just have to not go to certain places after a certain time of night …

its a bugger yeah. altho my favourite club is in chapletown, they switch the systems off and say “dont leave alone, group up with people walkin inthe same direction from the club or you will get fucked over” when the night is over

i’d rather not have to look over my shoulder or get a taxi from a club so i dont get done in… however i still go cos i love it.

rather than the countryside i’d pick a kinda in-between… somewhere that has low crime but a lot going on, sheffield maybe?

its no way as bad as the conservative media say it is but the progressive media who are highlighting real issues with regard to crime and breakdowns in society that can’t just be ignored.

I don’t read the daily mail sites, usually only Guardian, BBC and the local news. Also 10 years of listening on scanner and relatives at NHS frontline jobs so I know exactly how the criminal justice system works (and the wider effects of crime on all 3 blue light services). The reality is its only a fraction of incidents what actually get reported.

I think random attacks are rare other than in inner cities (motivated by robbery) but I am hearing about a lot more incidents where people known to one another kick off over minor stuff.

Everyone is capable of hurting someone else or doing something extreme if they are pushed far enough. Often its not inner city types but even “middle class” people especially when the effects of stuff like the coming economic recession kicks in.

there was a core of violence but mostly amongst football hooligans and racist incidents – but both of these things are starting to resurface.

A lot of this is motivated by the insecurity of a coming economic recession. Of course some chap is going to be fucking angry if he’s just learned his job has been outsourced to Asian companies especially if he spent 4 years in Uni to get that job, and he may get pissed and decide to smash the window of the nearest curry house.

He may not decide to physically take on Ramesh but only because he knows his brothers and dad will back Ramesh up in a fight.. but the hate is still there.

I think we are simply going to see a return to social conditions similar to those of my own teenage days in the mid 1980s. I wouldn’t class it as a disaster or anything to get particularly depressed about but there may well be more curbs on personal freedom and less spare cash and resources for “fun” stuff.

Oh yeah man i agree bout the scaremongering but the thing with those people is, The media make a shitload of money out of playing on peoples fears and it’s the ‘sheep’ ie the weaker minded people who fall prey to it! 😉

yeah i been to sheffield to see my m8 at uni once b4 .. and was amazed at how nice most people there seem to be … got split up from my m8s after a wicked night out and some random gave me his phone to call them up with .. and he offered .. i didn’t ask …just told him what had happend and that i was miles away from home …. if that had happened in some other places … alot of people wouldn’t have offered …or would of tryed to rob me cos i looked vunarable (even tho i had my meat cleaver under my coat as i thought it would be like round were i live:laugh_at:jk)…

i can’t be arsed to read the whole thread but from the 1st post

    Boothy, you are exactly right

we live in one of the safest places in the world and we all have free access to one of best education systems in the world

anyone who moans should fuck off to Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan or even France (their education is shitty)

    we have free health care

free houses and money for food if we lose our jobs

free votes and anyone can apply for all kinds of grants to do stuff in their community

that’s not to say we shouldn’t criticise our gov when they take our rights away, or challenge them to do better

but fuck! we are born the top 4 richest people in the world and we should use that privilege to change the world for the better
