Shroomery has a good guide to identifying them, and although there aren’t any really dangerous look alikes in the UK you could still give yourself an upset tummy 🙁
Botanical Name: Psilocybe semilanceata
Common Name: Liberty Cap
Family: Strophariaceae
Description Slimy, narrowly conical, brown to tan cap with brownish gills and smooth, off-white stalk; in pastures and manured areas.
Cap 3/8″ – 1″ (1-2.5 cm) wide; sharply conical, often peaked, and not expanding; sticky, smooth; brownish, fading to tan, bruising blue on margin.
Gills Attached, close, broad; grayish, becoming dark brown. Stalk 2″ – 4″ (5-10 cm) high, 1/16″ (1.5 mm) thick; very thin, whitish.
Veil Partial veil evanescent.
Spores 11-14 X 7-8 microns; elliptical, smooth, with pore at tip. Spore print purple-brown.
Edibility Hallucinogenic.
Season Late August-November.
Habitat Scattered to numerous, in tall grass and grassy hummocks in cow pastures.
Range Widely distributed: common in Pacific NW (USA), also reported in Quebec (Canada).
Look-alikes The hallucinogenic Psilocybe pelliculosa and Psilocybe silvatica grow in wood chips or mulch, and have conical caps.
Comments This species is one of the most familiar on the Oregon coast.
To do a spore print, put the cap on a white piece of paper and in a couple of hours spores will fall onto the paper and make it change colour. This table was obviously written for North American users, but it’s the same species that grows here.
I know they’re less like the typical classic lib cap, but I believe they are libs – have found plenty like those before that are a lot browner and have burger nips not pointy nips…
Found some today that I think are P. Cyanascens (sp?) just checking erowid to confirm…

interesting, very interesting
Am thinking that the ones on the right hand side of the pic could be P.Baeocystis (‘potent psilocybe’ :biggreen: ) and the ones I found today are Cyanescens… :weee:
Either way, from what I have read, there aren’t any lookalikes of libs or the ones I found today that are deadly poisonous- if any more experienced shroomers could confirm/ deny that, then that’d be cool…
OK well cyanescens have deadly poisonous lookalikes and I’m a bit dubious about the ones I found earlier now, am going to review all info thoroughly and check and recheck and assume they’re not the right ones if I’m not entirely happy…
I’d do an identification request on Shroomery if you’re not sure, they know what they’re doing.
Have had a few looks on shroomery, their forums look relatively dead, though there’s a few active posters….
nevermind, after consulting all of erowids photos, I’m pretty sure that I found P.Cyanescens earlier today:love:

Do a sporeprint and ask the guys on shroomery or mycotopia if they are ok.
Yes that’s a bloody good idea, i shall have a little looky on those sites, safe buddy! raaa
if you can get down my way in like september october ill take ya picking cliff and if u find out any decent spots nere you ill be up in a flashraaa
Wouldn’t I have to send them the spore print, or at least provide photos taken from a microscope looking at the spore print??
No, a spore print is just when you put the cap on a piece of paper and let the spores fall onto it, then photograph it.
I had an idea of what a spore print is, but thought that it’s main purpose was to look at the spores under a microscope. I guess a lot can be told just by the colour of the spores…
Am quite dubious about the shrooms that a friend and I found most recently – they don’t bruise blue and they look a lot like Amanita Crocea…
Furthermore they were found next to the sea about 100m above sea level on an ancient burial ground… I’ve seen some bark chippings lying around in the general area where I found the shrooms… but the more I read, the less confident I am about the identity of these shrooms…
Off to shroomery I go I guess…
be careful man other breeds except liberty caps are all so rare you can never be certain dont take chances just stick with the definetes , not worth risking the maybe pile
