  • For many years, the Church of England has supported Middle England in complaining about “debauched behaviour” of the “youth of today”

now the Middle Englanders are even turning on their forms of celebration (and TBH I can’t see of any problem with church bells, I thought it was normal for them to be rung on Sundays round here!)

Reverend – I’ll support your right to ring bells if you’ll support peoples rights to put on and attend raves :laugh_at:

Bells at church may be silenced
Church bells which have rung out for hundreds of years may be silenced after complaints they are a “nuisance”.
Environmental health officers are investigating the noise from the bells in St Peter and Paul’s Church, Aldeburgh, Suffolk.
Rev Nigel Hartley said about 20 people had complained about the ringing on Sunday afternoons.
He said that if officials uphold complaints, churches across the UK may have to consider the implications.
Mr Hartley said the bells had been used to call people to worship and for at least 500 years.
Suffolk Coastal District Council said a complaint had been received and officers were duty-bound to investigate.

    Story from BBC NEWS:

thats a fucking joke. That church has been there for hundreds of years then people move next to it and complain. pisses me right off. Same as when flats get built next to a pub then the new residents complain about the noise and they get there opening hours restricted. if you want a quite life dont move in right next door to a pub ffs!

whats worse is that 20 separate people complained

now I know that area is full of London incomer yuppie types but that could even describe me to an extent and I don’t go complaining about church bells..

and I can’t believe the 20 different complainers are all newcomers, I reckon its local people who have been wanting to whinge for ages but the church had too much power/influence in that area, but now they are using our new found freedom of speech/ability to challenge authority to make the area a worse place :hopeless:

the Rev should tell them all to go to hell :laugh_at:

if he lends me his dog collar etc I’ll go and do it for him, whilst getting a certain crew from not too far off to do a party in the church hall

I’m a lapsed Catholic but I know what to do as I’ve watched all of Father Ted, and he can say its a multicultural experiment :laugh_at:

My opinion on this, is that some people are fucking idiots and need a good shoeing.

if I was the rev I would have gone round their houses and stove in their windowswith the big stick they carry around (or maybe C of E don’t have them?) and then said it was Gods wrath for complaining about the bells :laugh_at:

I have always been very careful not to move in near any churches with bells as being woken up by them on sundays makes me very cranky :laugh_at:

Some folk need a grip on reality – if you dont want the bells on sunday dont live there :you_crazy they were there first at the end of the day :laugh_at:

the council in that area have told the complainers they will take no further action against the Church… :laugh_at:

oh and if you don’t want to hear church bells don’t move to Suffolk , it was (maybe still is?) the frontline between loads of rival christian church factions, so of course they are gonna try and outdo each other with bells..

    Good for them raaa

theres a church near my rents house, probably about 2 minutes walk, i was never really bothered by it when i lived there, mind you i was eithier in a coma or out by the time they started ringing!

    THE BELLS!!! THE BELLS!!!!!

Whatever next! Absolutely everything that can be seems to be regulated by rules from along way above which seem to leave no room for ‘common sense’ or just ordinary local peoples views. Even if they did get 20 complaints thats still not very many compared to the population of a whole town/village, most people are probably fine with it. Some times I quite like hearing some church bells in the morning! I dread to think what kind of society we’ll have in 20 years time if these people get there way.

    its worse than that

in this case the rules were for once allowing the local people a voice to complain against the powerful – an opportunity for dissent… there was a time no one would have dared question the actions of the Church in a village like that.

it wasn’t even from “above”, the Council were quite happy for the Church to ring bells as they have always done so over the centuries. A minority took it upon themselves to try and use the rules to dictate to others how they should live their lives…

thankfully the Council refused their complaint but they’ve still had to spend public money (possibly some of my money!) investigating this groundless complaint – they should have sent back one letter saying that its a British tradition to ring church bells and that if people were really bothered by this they should move elsewhere…

      I just don’t get it..

I have an aunt and uncle living next to an airport, they never hear the planes..

My EX in-laws lived next to railway they never heard the trains..

      People are strange :you_crazy

fuck it ban the cunts, ban chruches all together, stopping church bells is a step in the right direction i know id get angry

I don’t mind the sound of church bells. It’s a familiar sound that feels right in my world. But having said that, for along time i’ve felt that church bells are as much a source of noise pollution as the bass bins of a party.

If the environmental people don’t mind the sound of church bells, then they need to give a bit of latitude to those that like the sound 4/4 beats.
