thought this could be interesting. If you did GSCE’s, which ones did you do? and what grades did you get? 🙂
Physics : B
Biology: A
English : B
ICT Functional Skills : Pass
Citizenship : A
Business Studies : C
Maths : D (which is bullshit, it should’ve been a C)
Chemistry : C
Project (Some pointless crap..) : C
History: B
I struggled to remember most these subjects, let alone what I was taught in them, which proves just how shit the education system is (or how bad my memory has gotten, tbh it has gone downhill a lot, used to be near photographic). The way the education system works you only have to pass the exam and can then forget about what you’ve learnt and still get a job, quite funny really.
Also went into some exams on mephedrone and left early on a comedown (had to rackup in the toilets asap.. and still did better then others :laugh_at:)
O levels : Maths A, English Language A, French B (the changeover was happening and for some reason I did these 3 early, remember this was 1987)
GCSEs: English Literature A
Geography A
Computer Studies A
Chemistry B
Physics B
Craft, Design and Technology A (this was some kind of engineering / electronics course)
I am sure I have missed a subject out but I cannot remember 25+ years back which shows how irrelevant they are.
particularly annoying was something called “options” (do you still have this?) which meant that I was unable to do any other arts/creative subjects than English and not a second European language (wanted to do German but couldn’t do that and computer studies and electronics, which is really fucking short sighted when you consider which European country is a leader in IT / Electronics)
OK these are supposed to be good grades and helped me get a job but I can still rememeber amount of fucking stress that caused me in my teens and the damage to my relationship with my family, nearly got me sectioned too. Probably why the last thing I ever want to do is become a parent and have to put another person through this…
Nice nice! I also got a D in maths what a fucking joke. Tbh it’s never been my strong point, but hated every minute. Same with french!

Haha, thats hilarious. What compelled you to take meph before an exam?
And sweet GL! Yep we do still have the weird options system. I wanted to do music and DT but for some reason this wasn’t allowed because they were in the same column when choosing :hopeless:
Did music in the end 🙂
Yeah we do. Example there will be;
block A comprising of; Trance, Dance & House
block B DNB, Dubstep, Hardtek
block C psytrance, acid techno, garage
block D Jazz blues soul
you just get 1 choice from each block. Least that’s how we chose ours, so that there wasn’t any clashes with the timetable – if you couldn’t have what you wanted tough luck which is stupid! I can’t motivate myself to do something if it’s not something I really want to to do..

Good example!:D Weird system though you’d think there would be a better way of doing it. I had to do french at gsce where every minute of it was shit awful

Well I don’t know it was really stupid. Initially I didn’t want to, but when your mate comes up to you at 8am after you’ve had a strenuous 4 mile bike ride, carrying 7gs while you have an eigth of weed on you..
To be fair we just sat in a park for a few hours enjoying the sun, smoking spliffs and snorting lines until the time for my exams came where I just caned a fuckload smoked a few joints for some dutch courage, went in and nailed the first one (Got a A in business studies.. best grade I’d got out of all 3 exams I took) went out for a line in the toilet before Physics and then got a D in that but still got a B because of how modulars work.
Yeah I hate maths too, had to retake it this year but dropped it and gonna do it next year instead.

there really seems to be this prejudice against learning Germanic languages as if we are still fighting WW II FFS, even though England is culturally as close to NL and DE as FR…
Indeed – when I came to my 2nd secondary school after leaving London they suggested I stay learning French until year 9 as I’d already had some experience when I really wanted to learn German. I wouldn’t have been at any disadvanage either as in that secondary school (the one I just moved to) you learnt a bit of basic Spanish/French/German to decide which you liked and I was and still am pretty good at learning languages (Know some Danish, French, German although a lot of them are just basic as it’s been self taught/ taught from friends)
I am apparently supposed to be “good at maths” but it is difficult and stuff like algebra more so (if I can I try and use a computer to avoid having to do difficult maths…)
the government is fucking around with the exams again and making them more like the old O levels (which I did) with less modular stuff and “all or nothing” exams because “the Asians do it”. (The Asians also had a fucking horrendous youth suicide rate and mental health problems but at the same time they do still have manufacturing jobs to go to for non academic people which we no longer have in Britain..)
A-levels:
Philosophy – A
Sociology – A
Maths – B
GCSE’s:
Maths – A
Statistics – C
Science – B
Additional Science – C
English Lit – A
English Lang – B
Religious Studies – A
ICT – B
Home Economics – C … lol !
Resistant Materials – E
Music Tech – C
very good seeing as i hated school and never used to go in.. i was very ‘independent’ and stubborn – i have a big problem with being told what to do
Tbf we didn’t get opportunities to learn another language at school in Aus ( private schools did) and i always wish i could have learnt another language, and i still think back and get annoyed now. The only thing i can do is count to 10 in japanese because i did karate.
Itchy knee sun she go (that’s about all I can remember lol), I used to be able to count well high.
Jokesgez that’s well good mate. To be fair i’m supposed to be ‘intelligent’ but hate school and am probably going to fail my A-Levels, we’ll see. The extra pressure of being ‘intelligent’ doesn’t help though
Language education in UK at GCSE level is a bit of a joke tbh. We must have been through 3 or 4 German teachers as they kept having nervous breakdowns and leaving as everyone messed around so much, it was horrible really, looking back. I’d say it’s because languages don’t lend themselves to being taught classroom-style in large groups (I certainly didn’t learn English that way), but then most other European countries seem to be able to do it so I’m not sure why UK is so poor. I feel that I kind of owe it to my old German teachers to finish the job properly and learn German, but as an adult it’s expensive to take lessons and I’ve never got round to it.
From what I remember, I got…
Maths: A*
Dual Award Science (basic combined Physics, Chemistry, Biology that everyone did): A*/A*
IT: A*
Geography: A
English Language: A
Graphic Design: A
Business Studies: A
German: B
English Lit: B
That might not be exactly right – I actually have no record of my grades as they left my CV long ago (the good news if your grades aren’t up to much is employers don’t really care about them – some jobs might ask for ‘5 GCSEs grades A*-C’ but they rarely go into specifics).
