my employers do comply with the policy that the record is only relevant if it creates a risk – OTOH I do fear that some employers (particularly those who have deep-set prejudices) will simply find “another reason” for not offering you the job (such as not enough qualifications) and you would never know unless maybe someone else you know well is also competing for the position and you exchange info…

Its not just caring professions which seem to ask for CRB checks nowadays, a lot of jobs in financial services also request this…

I got a criminal record for 3 gramms of cannabis(wasnt even skunk or high thc weed) from suffolk police, and I think this has had a definate effect on subsequent job applications….

I was and still am gutted about this, so I think it really depends on how busy/bored the police are at the time

yeah that is bad news as it is invariably reported in the local rag….

but if society insists on throwing otherwise decent people on the scrapheap for minor pecadilloes in their lives it will only increase the amount of people ultimately turning to crime….

If I’d been put through that sort of unfair treatment I probably wouldn’t think twice about carrying out non-violent property crime to survive if I couldn’t get a job….

The whole thing is about social control and ‘branding’ people who refuse to play by the boring rules of the majority. And once they have been ‘branded’ with a record, they can be punished perpetually and prevented from getting any of the so called important positions in society where they could change the system. Drug laws often got nothing to do with any danger proposed by drugs, and how dangerousness is measured is usually pretty vague anyway. Are the most dangerous ones so due to number of deaths, hospital admissions or what? The report, not surprisingly, doesn’t state the criteria. Read Thomas Szasz’ book ‘Ceremonial Chemistry’. Makes interesting reading.

It always amazes me that the main detterant for recreational drug use is not the health implications. But the risk of getting caught with it, and subsiquently getting a conviction for possession or worse..

When freinds of mine in our youth were caught by their parents, most parents were far more concerned about them getting into trouble with the police and getting a record than anything else… such as the mental/physical health issues raised by the chemicals they got caught with..

About £100 – £130 on the oz in the southwest. bar (9 oz) for £850 – £950..

I got caught with a half bar and digi’s by a sniffer dog on the underground. I only got a caution for possession (which was pretty lucky)

the penalties do seem to be getting harsher in some areas though – some woman round here (Suffolk) got busted just for 28 grams in an untouched block without any paraphenalia and she got brought before Court.

she only got £50 fine but what I think is worse is that her full name and address are printed in the local rag; she is a mother as well so her kids could get hassle at school (OK although it may seem “cool” in some circles of friends IME until kids start high school they are fairly judgemental and puritanical)

Yah, I’m very carefull now.. Never carry much around, buy less.. etc..

They searched my house at 3am, which mum didn’t appreciate a whole lot.. They said they were going to verify my identify as I had no id and wasn’t “Known” to them, don’t know what looking in all the rooms, and in the loft had to do with that tho..

3 grams not bad. After an investigation into police behavoir at a peace demo(faslane peace camp). A number of my friends gave statements against them. In return they started a campain of harasment.

This led to one friend getting a fine after being stopped searched and having the fluf from his pocket analysed.

They found 0.0001 of a gram took him to court and fined him £50!!!!

I’ve miss out on many a job myself tho not for drugs. Its amazing how many doors shut when you have to disclose your criminal past as a peace camper.
