I remember those times, but don’t forget though that when we were younger not as many folk had cars, and those who did and were lucky enough to afford one what could do +100 mph didn’t want to crash it or risk losing their license! there is way more traffic on the road since those 20 years, and 24/7 deliveries of stuff (like our computers and AV equipment) mean yet more large vehicles/lorries even at random hours of the night.
I still don’t have a full driving license and TBH that is probably why I am alive today at age 40. I wasn’t a good boy back in the day in many respects and cars brought out a bad side in me, especially sharing the road with other people when I was often on a comedown ( of course I tried to stay sober for driving lessons!) Recently started learning again and it was shocking first how much more traffic there is compared with the 90s, and also how easy it is to go over speed limit (always getting warned by my instructor to watch my speed – and I am trying not to be a middle aged gary boy, honest :laugh_at: ) and when I do get my license I doubt I will be risking it driving to raves (only getting it for work TBH).
Well I was driving for almost a year before I passed my test, actually had 7 points on my license a month after I passed for driving a banger a couple of months before passing without a license or insurance, lucky they didnt take my license when I did pass, and lucky me and my mates didnt hurt anyone road racing tatty old cars like idiots.
All in all done a lot of stupid things and got very lucky many times, dont think Im boasting because Im not, it could easily have gone very bad and for many it does so no-one should repeat my mistakes no matter how much fun those mistakes were.
yep that was all normal for the era. had I not still been living at home with stricter parenting (I’m British Asian), I would have just driven anyway after narrowly failing my test and eventually took it at my timescales (assuming I hadn’t crashed and hurt myself/others in the process). and even then it was only because of being frightened to shame my family what stopped me driving illegally, otherwise the morals didn’t apply.
the other vulnerability of the system (I’ve mentioned how it assisted raves) was the cops had unreliable analogue radios in many areas (especially outside cities) and stuff like region wide or nationwide ANPR wasn’t feasible yet. DVLA, VOSA and cops/heddlu weren’t as joined up as they should have been. They did actually experiment with a ANPR vehicle in 1972 but the electronics of that time it weighed down the patrol car so much it could only do 40mph :laugh_at:
by the mid 2000s with greater affluence across the UK and more powerful cars more young people in SE England and EA actually died or got hurt bad through RTC’s going to and from raves than through drugs. in 2002 a specialist traffic copper what later appeared on the road wars TV series turned up at a rave and actually said to my mates “I’m really concerned about the change in this scene and how car enthusiasts are increasingly taking over from hippies, with all the drugs taken, fast carsand long distances driven people are gonna get hurt”. This cop wasn’t being overbearing or throwing his weight around but was being sincere and friendly for a cop, and in hindsight what he said was right.

Well… if you’re a none-driving hippy and you see dickheads with money and motors getting mashed just for being dickheads with money and motors, it can be quite funny, in a macabre sense. Evolution in action – “live fast, die stupid”.
TBH the appearance and behaviour of this cop were darkly amusing, especially when he also said “it is better when these raves were/are organised by hippys who mostly ride bicycles” (the SE England scene was split between eco warriors and gary boys at that time).
in fact I was quite glad to see he got the telly appearance as I felt he genuinely wanted to keep people safe on the roads.
that said if communities (not just old bill who are often more pragmatic than folk realise) really wanted their young people to remain safe they have no option other than to tolerate and accept EDM events “in their backyard”, within walking and cycling distance of the punters, and with a late enough closing time to mean that most folk aren’t going to bother with driving to a unlicensed afterparty. it seems to work across the North Sea… Otherwise they are risking the lives of their own children simply to have a quiet night which doesn’t reflect too well on England’s supposed reputation as a “tolerant and just” nation.
