these days even small animal vets use tiletamine and lorazepam or less psychedelic versions as the loss of balance and disorientation particularly causes cats to freak out and start scrabbling around and its been classed as against the new animal welfare rules to use the stronger/more psychedelic varieties – plus they can still use their claws! Incidentally a few years ago when I took a fair bit at a friends house and ended up slumped in the corner in a k-hole I found their pet cat and dog sat either side of me in a guarding position – both seemed to think there was something “wrong” and actually kept watch in the same way they would a puppy or kitten who was unwell!
Also both human and veterinary practices are well aware of the issues regarding diversion/theft of legitimate supplies and using less popular varieties reduces potential security risks for both their staff and their premises. TBH this happens with all controlled substances,
