I don’t just study the mainstream papers, and not everyones international communications or media was totally encrypted either until the digital age 😉
People were doing stuff like Wikileaks many years ago, although it of course took longer for the info to filter through. Alternative media existed in the 1980s when I was in high school and I was reading that as well.
how do you think I already knew what official cables look like, or what AUTOVON did/why much of its infrastructure was up here? (Especially as it was decommisioned 20 years ago). For many years I lived in Reading with atomic bomb factories near me, and a govt wireless spy station on my doorstep (which also made it a good place to listen to interesting stuff with your own radio kit 😉 )
Also I don’t just check on things in English either (or from England) and that also gives you a different perspective of what goes on in other countries. Even 20-25 years it was still hard to keep a secret.
In reality doing drugs distracted me much more from stuff like political / environmental/social awareness than the media – and for all the faults of it it is fact it is the left-wing mainstream media of many countries who are protecting Assange as much as they can and exposing the cables to others who might not understand how to interpret them.
I’m not saying that releasing this info or any other govt secrets are a bad thing but they are only one part of a fight for wider freedom and justice. it is not a miracle act which will quickly deliver world peace on its own.
In reality normal people (not govts / soldiers ) are currently too fucking stubborn especially with regard to their religious beliefs and disagreements over how increasingly scarce resources should be distributed – this is what is bringing the whole world towards war.
