I want to connect a big printer/photocopier to the network, but the managers here do not want to use cables for safety and appearance (and it would involve hacking up the door frame to get them through)
I know I need a box to connect the CAT5 patch cable from the printer to the wireless network (in place of just using a cable), but what is this called?
is it just an access point or called something else altogether?

This is what I would do…Tell your managers it’s the cheapest solution, and that a worldwide known french specialist (me) gave you the advice…I’m sure they would agree… : )
And f the door frame is too weak, drill the wall yourself:your office mates will consider you as a hero!!!

these types of things?
these types of things?
not quite unfortunately (although thanks for the link, may come in useful later)
the printer already has an RJ45 on it for the LAN cable…
I’m no expert but an access point only boosts the wireless signal for the room,so you’d still need some way of connecting the printer to that network.
Would it not be far easier just to get a print server that just plugs straight into the serial port on the printer.
like this one
Theres always the free option of connecting the printer by cable to the closest wireless machine and have that machine share its printer on to the wireless network.

thanks Mr 665
in thre end after some discussion this is what I did – explained to the managers that if they bought the wireless box it would cost way more as well as my time to get the damn thing working, and I found a gap below the door which means the cable could be safely routed without having to drill holes/cut the door frame
we already had a long network patch cable in the stores anyway, so now everything is sorted
And thanks to everyone else who provided the info on WLAN/USB print servers – this is useful for another job I have to do, as we are re-organising the office to get more space, these boxes will be good for the other USB printers…
