  • This is a toughy …

From a young age I have worked (about 12 or so) i have never really gone longer than a few weeks without a job, earning my own way. not neccesarily because its been drummed into me, although i do believe the statement you made dom its just i have always wanted to do things and be able to pay my own way.

I cant imagine not having a job, getting up and having routine … ive seen what having little routine does to me and its not good (bowing to the k demon :you_crazy)

The problem i have is that i work too much … in the last two weeks (checked my time sheet a few days ago) ive done 86.61 hours … now … thats a little insane, no? literally considering sleeping on a blow up mattress in my office so not to loose hours going home and coming back again … brghh …

i let work get to me … i let it take over my life which just is NOT the way to be … i guess i will always say i live to live but all in all my mentally is geared to living to work …

Know the feeling about overwork. Last month i had to prepare for a big evaluation of my dept which means hounding everyone to get their shit together…failing …. and having to do it for them (some of them are helpful but in a dept of 300 there’s a large scope for difficult characters)

i’ve decided to ban myself from doing overtime for the Summer (only 1/2 hour xtra today) but as you say there’s so much to do

One time i worked both Saturday and Sunday and after 14 continuous days i was crawling towards weekend..horrible

Saying that i’ve got a great flat, great bike, shed loads of records (pile still getting bigger) and the best dj set up along with analogue sythns that i could only dream when when i was on the dole for several years at the start

maybe not a “conventional” job but you didn’t get that hernia from being sat on your arse all day.. “work” need not be a normal job but just doing something useful.. sort of like the things mudstomper gets up to (well some of them anyway)

i not a wage slave though. thats what i’m on about… in that light i dont work.

Its actually way harder to be self-employed than work for an employer (and unfortunately less secure as more exposed to market forces)

The one time I was unemployed seemed good at the start but became a nightmare towards the end especially as no private sector employer wanted me as I’d dared to take a long career break – plus any “alternative” ways of money just weren’t there.

I found out the hard way that there’s fuck all real and long term opportunities for employment in the electronic dance music scene, even commercial events are a money pit as the authorities are determined to recover the costs of all the drugs treatment/addiction via licensing. I know people who may do a few paid DJ sets or hire out rigs but they barely cover their costs.

The same applies to 95% of the creative industries, especially as the market is skewed by enthusiastic middle class youths working for nothing whilst being funded by rich parents.

Ironically it was the very same Government I’d spent 15 years rebelling against and cursing what gave me a job in the end and boosted up my skills to the point I’ve actually done fairly well today! I would probably have considered some form of crime had I not got that job!

I work to live, If i didn’t have to I Wouldn’t but I know I do have to so i do.
But as long as i’m gonna have to work i’m gonna do summin i enjoy so thats why i do my job.
I’m also going to college doing an NVQ so that I can get on an Internship to the states next year so at least I’ve kind of got a plan for a bit.

When I finaly settle down and have to think about making proper money I’m also qualified in summin else not so fun but that I can start a buisness in and make decent money.

much as i would like greater freedom from a set work routine you need a lot of self discipine to work for yourself even if you have the skill to do so. its too easy to get distracted by more ‘interesting’ endeavours. Also if any mishap occurs you normally get some form of financial protection from your company.

i do respect those that manage by themelves

work is only hell due to bad management and office politics (which seems to be endemic in England)

    too fucking true GL !!!

I was meant to finish work at 230 today, but due to 2 members of staff’s shit hitting the fan again I’ve just got home :hopeless:
(!!! – this has been going on for approx 8 months and mon was the first time they were allowed to work together again and it kicked off)

    both are now off sick,
    manager is on annual leave,
as if we dont already have enough ‘propper’ work to do appart from haveing to cover theirs (when we’re already 2 staff members down)
does my fucking head in as I cant leave unless I am relieved () so that meant waiting for the night staff to come in….

    sorry I’m ranting 😥

Shit to eat or eat to shit…?

Probbly about to go bump the kinda cant pay wont pay thing. I’m not 100% ligit anyway. I’m not the kind of person to worry about weather a big corprate gets payed. I went into the bank and said ‘this charge will have a knock on effect’ the gaffer said ‘nowt i can do’ so fuck em i’ll abandon my bank anmd over draft and laff as it spirals into thousands of pounds of debt.

    Cant pay wont pay….

    What a load of bollocks!!

I have spent the majority of my working life in a self employed capacity. I hate corporations sucking like leeches on my psychic soul juice. When self employed I get properly rewarded for all the work I do. If I fuck up I take the consequences. I do the work because that’s what i want to do and not because some douche is telling me what to do. If I want to start early and quit early I do. If I want to start late and quit late I do.

Working for an employer is only easier if you don’t mind being ass raped 5 days a week.

work to live, the only reason i have a job is so i can afford my weekends.
every monday is starting the count down again

    I live for life!

    and work sometimes…bastards

well I’ve met a fair few bitter out of work ex “self employed” people who end up going from top of the pile to the shitheap (often suffering addictions and other problems). Many of them were once high flyers in the IT industry but didn’t keep up their skills or hustle for work when the dot com crash happened.

Even freelancers find themselves often dependent on one or two large clients and there is sometimes a feast and famine pattern on work.

This is complete crap as you can’t judge every employer in the same way.

Yes there are large soulless corporates and places which treat their employees badly but there are also some well run small businesses. I get exactly the same perks as many self-employed people such as flexible hours, the power to make my own decisions, but with more job security than many freelancers.

I even had the flexible hours and a surprising amount of autonomy when I was working in the public sector!

Part of it is crap yes. That doesn’t make it complete crap. My post pointed out that your sweeping generalisation was utter bollocks as a response to ‘it is way harder to be self-employed….etc’

For sure, a lot of people lack the intelligence, drive or balls to try self-employment. Also a lot of people work as employees and are real happy doing so.

    So I concede that some of what i said is inaccurate. I just really hate sweeping statements that are poorly thought out and totally inaccurate like;
Its actually way harder to be self-employed than work for an employer – because that is complete and utter crap.
