I was prescribed Zopiclone this time last year by the doc as i was having a hell of a time sleeping and getting a decent sleep..
Due to my blood disorder i can’t take Valium so these were one of the few things they could give me.. I don’t remember the metal taste in my mouth however i was smoking loads then and i’ve quit now so mite be different..
I think anything can be habit forming doesn’t matter if its sugar in your tea or taking a pill at bed time..
All “sleeping” tablets should only be used to help get you into a routine again
I was prescribed zopiclone when i was ill recently but I have to say I absolutely hated them. They made me sleep OK but I didn’t feel rested because it was more like a knockout than a stop-worrying-and-drop-off sensation.
They are also really shit with alcohol. I tried them for 3 or 4 days over a week but by the 3rd one we had a bottle of wine in the evening, and I had a really bad memory loss episode during the next day (so the wife tells me anyway, have no memory of doing the things in question :-(( ).
Zopi is only approved in the UK for a month’s regular use as it is somewhat addictive and not really different from temazepam in that respect (according to my GP who checked with the pharmacist). Don’t know whether it is a physical or a psychological dependency, to be honest I don’t really see the difference as brain chemistry is just a part of body chemistry AFAICS.
It also messes seriously with your anxiety etc and doesn’t even give you the temporary relief from it that temazepam and friends do.
When I was researching before accepting the prescription (always like to know what I’m putting in my body donchaknow ;-)) I found a lot of first hand tales on a patient’s discussion site, from people who had been given ZC for months or even for years, and who were crawling up the wall with it but unable to get themselves off it. Have a look for yourself:http://experience.patient.co.uk/discussion_list.php?d=194
I stuck to temazepam prescriptions, but made sure I wasn’t using it every day – just to knock me out when things got too bad. If I was sleepless but not feeling anxious/wound up then I might only have a half a tab, or else just got up and spent hours reading PV until I was tired :hopeless:
Much better now I have to say. Those ZC’s are still in the drawer and after my experience I have no desire ever to use them – must take them back to the chemists …

there are thousands (prob hundreds of ….) who are prescribed these sort of sleepers for years on end –
IMO generally as most GP’s / psychiatrists either dont have time to explore with their patients why they cant sleep and instantly reach for the prescription pad –
or are just simply lazy and prescribe rather than spend time with thier patients,
I’ve known of people to have to ‘detox’ off of them (zopiclone and zolpidem) – despite it being a ‘pcychological addiction; (I get what your saying Leveret – about it being the same)
inorder to be assisted with their anxiety / insomnia etc in coming off of them as people have had the ‘effect’ wear off and taken more and more – or who have used them during the day etc to assist them or the effect has worn off but they are too scared to stop taking them and often their GP has excessively prescribed (knowing they are ‘misusing them’) and had to have them being reduced grasually over time….
whereas Temazepam does need a gradual reduction due to the physical addiction and the fact that (the same as all benzo’s – if used regularily and over some longish period of time) as previously said the withdrawals can be really nasty and induce fitting
i found one 10 mg zolpidem last night and ate it after i’d had a few beers. i find that if you can make it past the first 15 minutes, you can stay awake with interesting effects.
i wish i hadn’t though. mrs globalloon cam downstairs at about 4a.m. and found me babbling incoherently “issh a shiple fugging schentanch. whysh it sho complicaterd?”
and i’d set fire to myself at some point during the evening
apparently one of the risks of using zolpidem regularly is if you drink alcohol, you become physically dependant on alcohol much more quickly. not sure how that works, but is true
that sounds interesting, maybe it attatches it to one of the receptors more or summat?
i cant be in the same room as them as i have a habit of munchin loads of them and gettin weird trippy/ babbleing shite to myself efects
the metal taste in my mouth the next day is that bad i,d consider lickin a cats arse to get rid of it!
I had a zopy th other day cudnt get speed anywhere n started panicin so phoned a mate for a valium, he only had zopys tho, all it did was knock me out n giv me a rotten taste in my mouth wen i woke up. x
Yeah I’ve got some for my insomnia, they work ok and you space out quite well but the metallic taste is such an annoyance, and not helped by the fact that drinking makes it worse! Ice is meant to help a bit but I haven’t tried it yet.
